Europe is better connected to Vietnam than any other long-haul region: Vietnam Airlines lists nonstop services to seven European cities, and most Western European passports now enter visa-free for 45 days. Here is what to know before you plan, checked in October 2026.
| Topic | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Flights | Vietnam Airlines nonstop from Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Milan, Copenhagen and London. Elsewhere, one stop via those cities, Istanbul, Singapore or Bangkok. |
| Flight time | Roughly 11–13 hours nonstop; 15–20 hours in total with one stop. |
| Time difference | Central European Time: Vietnam is 6 hours ahead in winter (from 25 October 2026) and 5 hours ahead in summer (from 28 March 2027). Finland: 5 and 4 hours. |
| Visa | 45 days visa-free for Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and others (see below). Austria, Ireland, Portugal and Greece need an e-visa. |
| Currency | Vietnamese dong (VND). Check xe.com against your euro, franc or krone. |
| Plugs | Continental two-pin C and F plugs fit; Swiss, Italian and Danish three-pin plugs need an adapter. No converter needed. |
| Best months | February–April and October–November for a full north-to-south trip; December–March for the south. |

From Charles de Gaulle, Vietnam Airlines flies nonstop to Hanoi, with Ho Chi Minh City also in its Paris network, subject to current schedules. Expect around 11–13 hours in the air. Travellers from Lyon, Nice and the rest of France usually connect through Paris, or fly one-stop via Istanbul.
Our tip: French travellers often come for history, architecture and food, and Vietnam rewards all three. We like to start in Hanoi – the Temple of Literature, the Old Quarter, a long lunch – and finish in Ho Chi Minh City, so ask the airline for an open-jaw ticket. Every tour has a private English-speaking guide, and French-, German-, Italian- or Spanish-speaking guides are available on request – mention your language when you enquire.
Germany has two Vietnam Airlines gateways. Frankfurt has nonstop flights to both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, roughly 11–12 hours; Munich has nonstops to both cities as well. From Berlin, Hamburg or Düsseldorf, the simplest routing is a domestic connection to Frankfurt or Munich, or one stop via Istanbul or Singapore.
Our tip: in our experience as trip planners, German-speaking travellers often take three weeks or more and like to be active – cycling through rice fields, walking in the mountains around Mai Chau and Pu Luong, nights in eco-lodges. A trip of that length is exactly where a private guide and driver pay off, because the route can flex day by day.
Since 16 June 2026, Vietnam Airlines has flown nonstop from Schiphol to Hanoi on the Airbus A350. It is now the obvious choice for travellers from the Netherlands and Belgium – and a handy connection for anyone flying in from smaller European airports via Amsterdam. For Ho Chi Minh City, connect onward inside Vietnam or fly one-stop via Paris or Frankfurt.
Our tip: fly into Hanoi, travel south through Hue and Hoi An, and take a short domestic flight from Ho Chi Minh City back to Hanoi for your flight home – or price an open-jaw via Paris or Frankfurt. Dutch passport holders enjoy 45 days visa-free for tourism.
There is no nonstop from Switzerland. Most Swiss travellers connect in Frankfurt, Munich or Paris onto a Vietnam Airlines nonstop, or fly one-stop via Istanbul, Singapore or Bangkok – roughly 15–20 hours in total. Geneva has the same choices.
Our tip: Swiss Type C two-pin chargers fit Vietnamese sockets, but three-pin Type J plugs need an adapter. Zurich's Sportferien (15–26 February 2027) and spring holidays (26 April – 7 May 2027) both fall in good weather for the north and the centre.
Elsewhere in Europe: Vietnam Airlines flies nonstop from Milan Malpensa to Hanoi, a strong option for travellers from northern Italy (Romans usually connect via Milan, Paris or Frankfurt). Copenhagen has a nonstop to Ho Chi Minh City, which also suits Swedes and Norwegians. From Madrid and Barcelona there is no nonstop; connect via Paris or Frankfurt on Vietnam Airlines, or via Istanbul or Singapore. Gulf routings via Doha or Dubai have been disrupted repeatedly in 2026, with EASA advising European carriers to avoid parts of Gulf airspace until at least 16 November 2026, so treat them as subject to current schedules.

Vietnam has distinct weather in the north, centre and south, so we match the route to your holiday. Our best time to visit guide covers each month. Key 2027 school holidays from official calendars:
February to April is one of the best periods for a full north-to-south trip. Christmas suits the south and the islands, with Hanoi cool. The August holidays coincide with the hot, wet season in the north and south, but the central coast around Hoi An and Da Nang is at its sunniest – so we plan summer trips around the centre, Ha Long Bay and the mountains.
Visa-free for 45 days (Resolution 44/NQ-CP, valid to 14 March 2028): Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the UK. Visa-free for 45 days for tourism (Resolution 229/NQ-CP, valid to 14 August 2028): the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria. Sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.
Austrian, Irish, Portuguese, Greek and Icelandic passport holders, and anyone staying longer than 45 days, need the e-visa: up to 90 days, US$25 single or US$50 multiple entry, about three working days, only at evisa.gov.vn. Planning a Vietnam–Cambodia–Vietnam loop? Use the multiple-entry e-visa. Passports should be valid for six months beyond arrival.
Money. The currency is the Vietnamese dong; check xe.com for today's rate against EUR, CHF, DKK, SEK or NOK. Cards are widely accepted at 4–5★ hotels and upscale restaurants; carry dong for markets and small towns.
Power. Vietnam runs on 220 V with sockets for two-pin plugs, so German, French, Dutch and Spanish chargers fit without an adapter. Italian Type L, Swiss Type J and Danish Type K three-pin plugs need one.
Ho Chi Minh City airports. The new Long Thanh International Airport (LTH) is expected to take long-haul flights from 2027 – check which Ho Chi Minh City airport is on your ticket (Tan Son Nhat, SGN, or Long Thanh, LTH).
In our experience as trip planners, European travellers often plan around longer holidays and use them well: three weeks, a slower rhythm, homestays or eco-lodges between the comfortable hotels, and a strong interest in travelling responsibly. These itineraries make a good starting point:
Prices are the "from" prices in US dollars listed on each tour page, based on 2 travellers sharing unless noted; your final price is confirmed for your dates. International flights are not included. Every trip is private and can be adapted.

Call or WhatsApp our European line +44 7520 660929, or email [email protected]. Tell us your dates, departure airport and who is travelling, and we will get you a free tailor-made itinerary.

Wonderful Jeep Tour in Cam Tin!
...It was a magical afternoon indeed! We did so much – we visited an incredible 200-year-old wooden house where the owner, an 84-year-old wood carver recognized by the Government of Vietnam for his contributions, welcomed us with open arms and shared his amazing home full of generations of history... Everyone we met in the Hoi An countryside greeted us with such warmth and hospitality—it truly touched our hearts...

Brilliant fantastic and such well organised holiday.
We have just returned from a trip covering Hanoi / ha long bay (1 day) / mai chau / siem reap and hoi an over a 2 week period and have had a truly amazing time. Quynh Nguyen has been brilliant - always sending reminders before of pick ups and asking after each how it went. Day trips and tours were all included and transfers. Everything went 100% well. Having a 2 year old boy gave us some concerns at the amount of travelling about but it all went so well!! I can’t recommend them enough.
