FAQ

The best time to visit Laos is from November to January which is the dry season of this country. However, Laos can be an all-year-round destination as each season has its unique attractions. Like other countries in Southeast Asia, Laos has 2 different seasons each year.

Dry season

The dry season lasts from November to April. The dry season can be divided into 2 parts including the cool season from November to February and the hot season from March to April. As it shows in its name, the cool season has lower temperatures and the weather is a lot cooler. During the hot season, it might be exhausting to travel under the burning heat of this Southeast Asian country.

Wet season

Instead of raining all day long, the rainy season in Laos means there will be a few hours of rain each day. (But all-day rains sometimes do happen.)

An advantage of the wet season is the cool and refreshing weather with clean air. Also, there are fewer tourists and crowds during this season so your trip can be cheaper and more comfortable on many levels. Laos is also most beautiful in the wet season as it is the rice-planting season for farmers. You have the opportunity to enjoy verdant, emerald-green rice fields set against a backdrop of dramatic, cloudy skies.

Flight

If your preference is time-saving, air travel can be an option. However, domestic flights are pretty costly and they are frequently canceled or delayed. Some domestic airlines are Laos Airlines and Lao Skyway.

Bus

This is the most common transportation mode to move between cities. For a five to six-hour ride, a ticket costs from 80,000 – 130,000 LAK ($9-15 USD). Local buses can be uncomfortable to take as there is no air conditioning. In major cities, you can purchase a bus ticket from a tour operator to ride on a much better bus.

Boat

As the Mekong River runs along Laos, boats are the most popular ways to get around the country. You can catch a slow boat between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang and enjoy the scenery of this country on the water. The journey takes 2 days.

For shorter trips such as Luang Prabang to the Pak Ou Caves, you can take a river taxi for $10 per hour.

Vientiane

Although being the capital of Laos, Vientiane feels like a small town. During the colonial period, this city used to be a French trading post. As a result, Vientiane has a delightful and beautiful French quarter that amazes travelers.

The architecture of this city is French-inspired with some famous attractions such as Patuxai which is the Laotian version of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Other attractions are local markets and temples like Wat Si Saket.

Luang Prabang

Situated on the famous Mekong and Khan rivers, Luang Prabang is truly the heart of Laos. This small town is impressively vibrant with its French architecture streets and houses. There are 33 temples and many bustling night markets in Luang Prabang.

Here, you can find many tours of rivers and waterfalls. There are also bustling night markets where many signature handmade goods are sold. Luang Prabang is a popular destination in Laos as it serves as the first or last stop for travelers in this country before going to/ from Thailand.

Vang Vieng

Situated between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng is a pretty town. In the past, Vang Vieng was infamous for its wild nightlife scenes. But the local government has done a great job in resetting the security for the city.

Nam Song River is the top tourist attraction in Vang Vieng where you can explore both the river and the jungle. Tham Phu Kham Cave also attracts a lot of nature lovers thanks to its lagoon and bronze statue of Buddha.

Huay Xai

As a border town between Laos and Thailand, Huay Xai is often visited by travelers who cross from one country to the other. Huay Xai is famous for its Mekong River cruises traveling between Luang Prabang and Huang Xai. Many tourists consider this cruise a highlight of the Laos trip.

You can also pay Bokeo Nature Reserve a visit while staying in Huay Xai. This Reserve offers a unique Gibbon Experience.

Tam Lao

Tam Lao is a dish of spicy young papaya salad. It consists of dried shrimp, black crab, tomatoes, and a signature Laos fish sauce called a page. Tam Lao is served with a big portion of dried red chilies. It has a funny taste: sweet from sugar, sour from citrus, and spicy from chilies.

Tam Taeng

This is another salad dish with the main ingredient of cucumber, shrimp, long beans, peanuts, and tomatoes. It can be either served with Khao poon (fermented rice noodles) or Khao niao (sticky rice). Similar to other Laos salads, chilies and citrus are also used to make the dressing.

Yam Patu

Yam Patu is Laos tuna salad. As this country doesn’t have any beaches, locals often use canned tuna to make this dish. It is mixed with fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, ginger, and garlic to add up flavor. Other vegetables are lemongrass, cilantro, onions, tomatoes, and of course… chilies. All are served together.

Yam Mak Kuea Nyao

This special salad is charcoal-grilled green eggplants cooked until they turn black. After that, the black skin is peeled off and the flesh is mixed with hard-boiled egg, fish sauce, citrus, and chili dressing. Some places also use shallots, cilantro, and dried shrimp to make this dish.

Most foreign visitors require a visa to enter Laos. You can either apply for a visa in advance at a Lao embassy or consulate, or obtain a visa on arrival at the airport or some land borders. It’s recommended to apply for a visa in advance to avoid potential long lines and delays at the airport.

Some popular attractions in Laos include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang, the capital city of Vientiane, the Pak Ou Caves, and the Kuang Si Waterfall. There are also numerous national parks, historical sites, and cultural experiences to explore throughout the country.

Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended due to the hot and humid climate. It’s also a good idea to bring comfortable shoes for walking and hiking, insect repellent, and sunscreen.
