In short

Rosewood Luang Prabang is a 23-key resort built around a waterfall in the Nahm Dong valley, a 24-minute drive from the airport and outside the old town. Guests stay two to four nights. It suits couples who want nature and quiet, and families with children over 10 who like a tent with a view.

Why it is worth it

Designer Bill Bensley reimagined a forgotten 19th-century hill station as a resort set around a waterfall on the Nam Dong River, with water running through the grounds. The 23 keys range from Riverside Rooms and Suites to Riverside Villas, Waterfall Pool Villas with private pools and Hilltop Tents above the valley. Suites carry the names of early French visitors to Laos such as Auguste Pavie and Alix Aymé. The Great House serves French and Lao cooking indoors or on an open terrace facing the waterfall, and Sense, A Rosewood Spa, sits in the same valley. You pay for setting and design rather than a town address.

This is a valley resort, so expect slopes, steps and a climb to the tents. Older travelers do well in the Riverside Rooms and Villas near The Great House. The resort runs complimentary on-demand transfers into town from 9 am to 9 pm, and children 12 and under stay free with their parents, with breakfast.

How we usually build the stay

Night 1Private transfer from the airport, about 24 minutes. Afternoon tea at The Great House, then sunset by the waterfall.
Day 2Dawn alms offering in town with your guide, Wat Xieng Thong and the morning market. Afternoon spa or pool; dinner in town.
Day 3Kuang Si waterfall and the Living Land rice farm by private car. Evening Private Waterfall Dinner on the estate.
DepartureLate breakfast, then a transfer to the airport or to the railway station, about 30 minutes away.

How we fit it into your private trip

We place Rosewood at the end of a northern Laos route, usually three nights after Vang Vieng or Nong Khiaw, with a private car and guide for town and Kuang Si. Pair it with a night or two in the old town if you want to walk out of your door to the temples. From Luang Prabang, direct flights continue to Siem Reap, Hanoi or Bangkok, or the express train returns to Vientiane.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Good to know

  • Ban Nadueay village: 10 km and about 24 minutes from the airport; the railway station is 16 km, about 30 minutes.
  • Check-in from 3 pm, check-out at noon; all accommodations are non-smoking.
  • Children 12 and under stay free sharing with parents, with breakfast; extra beds only in Riverside Villas and Riverside Suites.
  • A daily tuk-tuk shuttle and complimentary bicycles are offered alongside the on-demand car transfers.
  • Dry season runs roughly November to March; the waterfall and river are fullest right after the rains.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rosewood Luang Prabang suitable for travelers in their 70s?

Yes, with the right room. The valley has slopes and steps, and the Hilltop Tents sit above the rest of the resort. We request a Riverside Room, Suite or Villa close to The Great House and the spa, and use the resort's car service for every trip into town rather than the bicycles.

Can children stay, and is there a family room?

Yes. Children 12 and under stay free when sharing with parents, including breakfast, and the Two-Bedroom Riverside Suite is built for families. Extra beds are only permitted in Riverside Villas and Riverside Suites. We find it works best with children over 10 who enjoy the river, the farm visit and the waterfall.

How far is the resort from the old town?

The resort sits outside town in the Nahm Dong valley, 10 km from the airport. It runs complimentary on-demand transfers into Luang Prabang town from 9 am to 9 pm and lends you a local phone to call for pick-up. For the dawn alms offering or a late dinner we add a private car.

Is the rate per room or per person?

Rates are per room, villa or tent per night, not per person. Your written quote shows the category, the number of nights and how the stay fits into the whole trip price. Price is confirmed in your written quote.
