In short

Amantaka is an Aman resort of 24 suites set on a historic garden estate in the center of Luang Prabang, a 10-minute drive from the airport. Most guests stay two or three nights. It suits couples who like slow mornings, and families with children old enough to enjoy temples and river time.

Why it is worth it

Amantaka sits at the foot of Mount Phousi, inside the UNESCO World Heritage old town and a short stroll from the Mekong. The 24 suites have high wooden ceilings, four-poster beds and private verandas or courtyards; the Mekong, Khan and Pool Suites add a private pool. The estate holds a main pool, a library, an Aman Spa and three places to eat: The Restaurant for Lao and French-influenced cooking, the casual Pool Terrace and the Lounge. In a town of small hotels packed along narrow lanes, you are paying for space, gardens and a staff who arrange the day around you.

The pace is gentle. The old town is flat and walkable, which suits travelers in their 60s and 70s. Children over 10 enjoy the dawn alms offering and the Mekong sunset cruise the resort arranges. Plan for early starts on temple mornings and hot, humid afternoons, which is where a pool suite earns its keep.

How we usually build the stay

Night 1Private transfer from the airport, 10 minutes. Settle in, then an evening stroll with your guide to the night market and the Mekong bank.
Day 2Dawn alms offering, then Wat Xieng Thong and the Royal Palace Museum. Afternoon at the pool or spa; dinner at The Restaurant.
Day 3Kuang Si waterfall in the morning by private car; late-afternoon Mekong sunset cruise arranged by the resort.
DepartureBreakfast on the veranda, then a short drive to the airport for Siem Reap, Hanoi or Bangkok.

How we fit it into your private trip

We usually place Amantaka as the last three nights of a Laos trip, after Vientiane, Nam Ngum Lake or Vang Vieng by the Laos-China express train, with a private car and guide waiting at Luang Prabang station. From here it is a direct flight to Siem Reap for Angkor, or to Hanoi and Bangkok. Guests who want river time first can arrive by Mekong slow boat from Huay Xai.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Good to know

  • Central Luang Prabang, a 10-minute drive from the international airport and a short walk from the Mekong.
  • 24 suites; the Mekong, Khan and Pool Suites have private pools, the entry Suite opens onto a mango-shaded courtyard.
  • The restaurants are open to non-residents subject to availability, so we book dinner ahead in high season.
  • The dawn alms offering starts before sunrise; your guide briefs you on etiquette the evening before.
  • Dry season runs roughly November to March; April and May are hot.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amantaka suitable for travelers in their 70s?

Yes. The estate is on one level with short walking distances, and the old town around it is flat. We keep temple mornings short, use a private car for Kuang Si and build in afternoons at the pool. Tell us about mobility needs and we request a suite close to the restaurant and spa.

Can children stay at Amantaka?

Yes. Aman runs a Family Adventure program here and the resort publishes no minimum age. In our experience it works best with children over 10 who can sit through a temple visit and enjoy the river cruise. Ask us which suite combination suits a family of four.

How do we get to Luang Prabang?

Luang Prabang has direct flights from Hanoi, Bangkok and Siem Reap, and the express train from Vientiane takes about two hours. The resort is a 10-minute drive from the airport. We arrange the private transfer and, if you arrive by train, a car and guide at the station.

Is the rate per suite or per person?

Hotel rates are per suite per night, not per person. The quote we send shows the suite category, the number of nights and how the stay sits inside the full trip price. Price is confirmed in your written quote.
