In short

Seven Stars in Kyushu is JR Kyushu's seven-car cruise train with just ten suites for up to 20 guests. Journeys start and end at Hakata station in Fukuoka: a two-day, one-night circuit or a four-day, three-night circuit with the middle night in a ryokan. Demand exceeds seats, so places are allocated by application and lottery. It suits couples and adult families who plan a year ahead.

Why it is worth it

Everything on board is made for 20 people: the Blue Moon lounge car, the Jupiter salon, a dining car and four suite cars with three suites each, plus two Deluxe Suites at the ends of the train. Suite A has a wall-to-wall rear window. The fare covers the train, all meals and drinks except vintage alcohol, the Seven Stars buses, every excursion and, on the four-day journey, the ryokan night with kaiseki dinner. The 2027 spring and summer circuits visit Takachiho, Aso, Usa Jingu shrine and the Kuju highlands, with pottery, kagura mask and wagashi workshops at the stops.

Expect a fixed, group-paced program with a crew rather than a private guide; guests must be 12 or older. Applications open in short windows twice a year, results come by lottery, and some departures are chartered to contracted agents. This is a product you plan around, not add at the last minute.

How we fit it into your private trip

We treat Seven Stars as the centerpiece of a Japan trip and plan the rest around the lottery result. A workable pattern is Tokyo and Kyoto with our private guides first, the bullet train to Fukuoka, the cruise train, then two nights in Fukuoka or Nagasaki before flying home or on to Vietnam. We submit the application in your name during the window and hold alternative dates.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Good to know

  • Departure and arrival station is Hakata in Fukuoka, about 15 minutes from Fukuoka Airport by car or subway.
  • Applications are accepted only through the official website in set windows (for example 1 to 20 October 2026 for March to August 2027 journeys); a lottery is held when demand exceeds seats, and results are emailed about a month later.
  • Participation is limited to guests aged 12 and above; rooms cannot be shared with other parties and specific suites cannot be guaranteed.
  • Fares are quoted per guest and differ for one or two guests per suite; cancellation charges start 21 days before departure.
  • Overseas guests can also book certain dates through contracted agents in the UK, US, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Thailand.

Frequently asked questions

Can you guarantee a place on the train?

No one can. JR Kyushu allocates seats by application and lottery, and some departures are sold as charters to contracted agents. We apply during the window, keep a second-choice date, and only lock the rest of your Japan itinerary once the result is confirmed.

Can children join?

Only from age 12. The train is built for 20 adults, the days follow a fixed program with workshops and restaurant dinners, and younger children are not accepted by the operator.

Is the price per person or per suite?

Per guest, with a higher rate when one person occupies a suite alone. All meals, most drinks, buses and excursions are in the fare. Price is confirmed in your written quote and is subject to allocation.

Is there a private guide on board?

No. The Seven Stars crew look after guests on board and crew or local guides accompany excursions. For the rest of your Japan trip we provide our own English-speaking guide and driver.
