In short

Ylang is Heritage Line's two-night ship on Lan Ha Bay, the quieter southern part of the Ha Long seascape. It carries at most 20 guests in ten suites of 40 to 54 sqm, each with a private balcony, and runs a wellness program of tai chi, spa, meditation and gentle shore outings. It suits couples and families with teenagers who want three days of calm rather than a one-night dash.

Why it is worth it

Ten suites on two decks is small even by Lan Ha standards, and the suites are large: Signature Suites are 40 sqm on the main deck, the four Regency Suites 51 to 54 sqm on the upper deck. Interiors follow a Vietnamese floral theme drawn from local poetry. The ship has a spa with three treatment rooms, steam bath, sauna and reflexology corner, a wellness studio for tai chi, yoga and tea ceremony, and a jacuzzi pool on the terrace deck. The route goes deeper into Lan Ha than one-night boats can: Viet Hai village by bicycle, a walk in Cat Ba National Park, a beach afternoon and kayaking at Frog Lake.

The pace is unhurried with one activity per half day, which suits travelers in their 60s and 70s; the national park walk and the village cycle are optional. Meals and listed activities are included; spa treatments, bay admission fees and transfers from Hanoi are not.

Highlights

  • Ten suites only, 40 to 54 sqm, all with private balcony

  • Cycling through Viet Hai village and a walk in Cat Ba National Park
  • Kayaking at Frog Lake on the last morning
  • Meals, guided excursions, coffee, tea and water included

A typical two-night cruise

Day 2Tai chi at sunrise; short bus ride and walk in Cat Ba National Park; lunch; beach, swimming or steam bath at a quiet anchorage; multi-course dinner.
Day 3Early tai chi and coffee; kayaking at Frog Lake; brunch on the way back; speedboat to Tuan Chau and your car to Hanoi or the airport.

How we fit it into your private trip

We place Ylang in the middle of a northern Vietnam itinerary: two or three nights in Hanoi with our guide, a private car to Tuan Chau Marina (about two and a half hours), the cruise, then straight from the marina to Hanoi airport for a flight to Hue, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City. For a slower trip we add Ninh Binh or Mai Chau before the bay.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Good to know

  • Embarkation at Tuan Chau Marina, Ha Long City, about 2.5 hours by private car from Hanoi; a short speedboat ride connects marina and ship.
  • Included: accommodation, meals in the program, group excursions, English-speaking guide, welcome drink, coffee, tea and mineral water. Not included: bay admission fee, spa treatments, other drinks, transfers from Hanoi.
  • Suites: Signature 40 sqm (main deck), Regency 54 sqm and Regency Premium 51 sqm (upper deck); the Premium suites carry a surcharge.
  • Rates are quoted per adult sharing a suite and differ between October to April and May to September.
  • In some summer weeks the operator swaps Ylang and its sister ship Ginger; we tell you before confirming.

Frequently asked questions

Is two nights too long on the bay?

Not on Ylang. One-night boats spend most of their time near the pier; the second night lets the ship reach the national park side of Cat Ba and a beach anchorage, and leaves a free afternoon for the spa. Guests who prefer one night can take sister ship Ginger instead.

How do we get there from Hanoi?

By private car with your Metta driver, about two and a half hours on the expressway to Tuan Chau Marina. Check-in is at Heritage Line's lounge; a speedboat takes you to the ship. On the last morning the same car collects you, or we route you directly to Hanoi airport.

Is it suitable for travelers in their 70s?

Yes. The ship has an elevator-free layout over two suite decks, so we book main-deck Signature Suites for guests who avoid stairs. Excursions are optional and short; tai chi, spa and the terrace pool fill the time comfortably.

Is the rate per cabin or per person?

Heritage Line quotes per adult, based on two sharing a suite, with seasonal rates. Price is confirmed in your written quote, including the car from Hanoi and the bay admission fee.
