In short

Heritage Cruises Binh Chuan is a 20-suite boutique ship sailing Lan Ha Bay, the quieter southern part of the Halong seascape around Cat Ba. Sailings run one to three nights from Tuan Chau Marina. It suits couples and families with older children who want space, good food and a slower bay than the main Halong routes.

Why it is worth it

The ship is a modern tribute to the Binh Chuan, the first large steamer built by Vietnamese shipowner Bach Thai Buoi a century ago. Every one of the 20 suites has a private balcony, a bathtub and a walk-in shower; the smallest is 33 square meters. On top sits a heated pool of about 32 square meters with cabanas, which the operator calls the largest cruise pool in the Gulf of Tonkin. Below are two restaurants, a wine cellar, a two-room spa, a gym and L'Art de l'Annam, a floating gallery of paintings by Pham Luc and other Vietnamese artists.

The pace is gentle: kayaking, a bamboo-boat ride into Dark and Bright Cave, a village visit by bicycle or electric car, cooking demonstrations and an optional early Vovinam session. Decks are linked by stairs. Lan Ha Bay is calmer and less crowded than central Halong, which is the main reason we recommend it to couples in their sixties and seventies.

Highlights

  • 20 suites in four categories, all with private balcony, bathtub and walk-in shower
  • Heated pool on the Panorama Deck, open year-round, with private cabanas
  • L'Art de l'Annam floating gallery with works by painter Pham Luc
  • Two restaurants, Le Tonkin and L'Indochine, plus the Bach Dang wine cellar
  • Lan Ha Bay: Ba Trai Dao beach, Dark and Bright Cave, Viet Hai village on two-night sailings
  • White Lotus Spa with two treatment rooms and a 24-hour gym

A typical two-night cruise

Day 1Private car from Hanoi to Tuan Chau Marina. Lounge check-in from 11:30, boarding 12:30. Lunch while sailing into Lan Ha Bay, kayaking or swimming at Ba Trai Dao, cooking class, dinner at Le Tonkin.
Day 2Breakfast, then by speedboat or dayboat to Viet Hai village; cycle or ride an electric car through the forest. Afternoon beach time, evening cooking class and dinner on board.
Day 3Bamboo boat into Dark and Bright Cave, brunch while cruising back. Arrive Tuan Chau about 10:30; private car on to Hanoi or Ninh Binh.

How we fit it into your private trip

We usually place this cruise after two or three nights in Hanoi, with a private car and driver for the drive to Tuan Chau Marina on the new expressway. One night works as a taster; two nights add Viet Hai village and a second swim. After disembarking at 10:30 you can be in Ninh Binh for lunch or at Noi Bai airport for an afternoon flight to Da Nang or Hue.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Good to know

  • Departs Tuan Chau International Marina, Halong City; Hanoi hotel pickup is at 8:00 to 8:30 and the return drop-off around 14:00 to 14:30 if you use the operator's shuttle. Metta normally sends a private car instead.
  • All meals on board are included (lunch, dinner, breakfast, brunch), as are kayaking, bamboo boating, cave entry and the village visit. Massages, drinks beyond the welcome drink and tips are extra.
  • Cruises run year-round; the operator notes most guests prefer September to April, while May to August is hotter with tropical showers. Ba Trai Dao beach is replaced by Tra Bau from May to September.
  • The operator describes the ship as family-friendly, with cribs, high chairs and children's meals on request. No minimum age is published.
  • 20 suites: 6 Delta (33 m²), 10 Ocean (33 m²), 2 Captain (38 m²), 2 Regal (46 m²). A Regal Suite can connect with an Ocean Suite for families.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lan Ha Bay better than Halong Bay for an older couple?

For most of our guests, yes. Lan Ha lies on the Cat Ba side of the same limestone seascape, with far fewer boats, so swimming spots and caves are quieter. Activities are optional and the ship has a pool, a gallery and a library for the hours you prefer to stay on board.

How do we get there from Hanoi?

Tuan Chau Marina is about two and a half hours from central Hanoi by the expressway. Metta sends a private car and driver, timed for the 11:30 lounge check-in. On the way back the same car can continue to Ninh Binh, Hai Phong or the airport instead of returning to Hanoi.

One night or two?

One night gives you the bay, a swim or kayak, the cave and two very good meals. Two nights add the Viet Hai village morning by bicycle or electric car and a second afternoon on the water, which is the version we suggest if your trip allows the time.

Is the rate per cabin or per person?

Cruise rates are quoted per suite for two guests sharing, with supplements for single occupancy and for a third person where the suite allows. The exact figure for your dates and suite category is confirmed in your written quote.
