In short

Ginger is Heritage Line's one-night ship on Lan Ha Bay, with twelve suites of 37 to 50 sqm, each with a private balcony, and a pool on the terrace deck. The 'Hidden Worlds' program packs a village cycle, a cooking class and morning kayaking into 24 hours. It suits couples and families with older children who have limited days in the north but still want a small, quiet ship.

Why it is worth it

Twelve suites over three decks keep the ship to 24 guests. Junior and Signature Suites are 37 sqm, the Regent Suites 50 sqm, all with balcony, in-room lounge and full bathroom. The style is a nod to Ming-era opulence with a contemporary edge. The restaurant has near-360-degree glass walls and an open kitchen with live cooking, there is a library lounge, a spa across the stern with a steam bath and a VIP couple room, and the terrace deck pool is the only one of its kind among Heritage Line's bay ships. The itinerary leaves the pier traffic behind: Viet Hai village by bicycle, a hands-on Vietnamese cooking class, squid fishing after dinner and kayaking at Frog Lake before brunch.

A one-night cruise is a busy 24 hours, so this is for travelers who are comfortable with a full day. Guests who want a slower rhythm should take sister ship Ylang for two nights.

Highlights

  • Twelve suites, 37 to 50 sqm, all with private balcony

A typical one-night cruise

Day 1Check in at Heritage Line's lounge at Tuan Chau Marina; speedboat to Ginger; lunch under sail; cycle Viet Hai village; cooking class; dinner, then a drink at the bar or squid fishing.
Day 2Tai chi on the terrace deck with coffee and pastries; kayaking at Frog Lake; brunch while cruising back; speedboat to the pier and your car to Hanoi or the airport.

How we fit it into your private trip

Ginger works as the bay night in a compact northern itinerary: Hanoi, the cruise, then a flight south the same afternoon. We send a private car from Hanoi to Tuan Chau Marina in the morning (about two and a half hours), and on day two the car waits at the pier so you can reach Hanoi airport for an afternoon flight to Hue, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Good to know

  • Embarkation at Tuan Chau Marina, Ha Long City, about 2.5 hours by private car from Hanoi; cruises depart daily.
  • Suites: Junior 37 sqm (main deck), Signature 37 sqm (upper deck), Regent 50 sqm; all have balconies.
  • Included: accommodation, meals in the program, group excursions, English-speaking guide, welcome drink, coffee, tea and mineral water. Not included: bay admission fee, spa treatments, other drinks, transfers.
  • Rates are quoted per adult sharing a suite and differ between October to April and May to September.
  • From early August to late September the one-night program is operated by sister ship Ylang instead of Ginger.

Frequently asked questions

Is one night enough on Lan Ha Bay?

For most first-time visitors, yes. Ginger's program covers a village, a cooking class and kayaking inside 24 hours, and you are back at the pier by late morning. If you would rather have a free afternoon and a spa day, Ylang's two-night cruise is the better fit.

How do we get there from Hanoi?

By private car with your Metta driver, about two and a half hours on the expressway to Tuan Chau Marina. Check-in is at Heritage Line's lounge there, and a speedboat takes you to the ship. We time the return for an afternoon flight from Hanoi if you are heading south.

Is it suitable for travelers in their 70s?

Yes, with main-deck Junior Suites to avoid stairs. The cycling and kayaking are optional; many guests stay on the terrace deck or in the spa while others go. Boarding is by speedboat with crew assistance.

Is the rate per cabin or per person?

Heritage Line quotes per adult, based on two sharing a suite, with seasonal rates. Price is confirmed in your written quote, including the car from Hanoi and the bay admission fee.
