Quick answer

Allow 7 to 10 days for a first trip to Laos. Seven days covers the north well: four nights in Luang Prabang, then the train south via Vang Vieng to Vientiane. With 10–14 days you can add southern Laos – the Bolaven Plateau, Wat Phou and the 4,000 Islands – by flying to Pakse. If Laos is one stop on a Vietnam and Cambodia trip, give Luang Prabang three or four nights.

Laos rewards a slow pace. Distances look short on the map, but mountain roads are slow, and the best moments – the morning alms round, a boat up the Mekong, an afternoon at Kuang Si Falls – need unhurried time. Here is how we size trips for our guests.

How long to spend in each place

  • Luang Prabang: 3–4 nights. One day for the old town and Royal Palace Museum, one for the Mekong and Pak Ou Caves, one for Kuang Si Falls, and an early morning for the alms round.
  • Vang Vieng: 1–2 nights. Limestone scenery, caves and the river. Many travellers stop here between Luang Prabang and Vientiane.
  • Vientiane: 1–2 nights. Pha That Luang, Wat Si Saket, Patuxai and the Buddha Park are enough for a full day.
  • Plain of Jars (Phonsavan): 2 nights. Usually reached by road or flight; worth it for history lovers.
  • Southern Laos: 4–5 nights. Pakse for the Bolaven coffee plateau, Champasak for Wat Phou, then two or three nights on the 4,000 Islands.

Getting around saves days

The Laos–China Railway has changed the maths in the north. According to the 2026 timetable reported by Seat61, fast trains take about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, and about an hour from Vientiane to Vang Vieng. Every passenger needs a passport to buy a ticket, sales open seven days ahead, and stations are 12–14 km from town centres. Flights link Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse, which is how we reach the south without two long days on the road.

Laos on a Vietnam and Cambodia trip

On a two- or three-week Indochina trip, Laos usually means Luang Prabang: three nights is the minimum we recommend, four if you can. Fly in from Hanoi and out to Siem Reap, which avoids slow land borders and keeps the Lao e-visa option open. See our Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos tours and the Laos e-visa guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is one week enough for Laos?

Yes, for the north. Seven days covers Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane at a comfortable pace, using the train for the journey south.

How many days do I need in Luang Prabang?

Three to four nights. That gives you the old town, the alms giving at dawn, a boat trip to the Pak Ou Caves and a relaxed visit to Kuang Si Falls.

Is it worth going to southern Laos?

If you have 10 days or more, yes. The Bolaven Plateau, Wat Phou and the 4,000 Islands are quieter than the north and best reached by flying to Pakse.

When is the best time to visit Laos?

November to February is dry and pleasantly warm. March to May is hot, and May to October is the green season, with heavy rain especially in July and August.

Should I travel between Laos and Vietnam by land?

Usually not on a holiday. Mountain roads are long, and the Lao e-visa does not work at the Vietnam land borders. A one-hour flight saves a full day.
