Private tour with your own English-speaking guide · 12 days / 11 nights · Luang Prabang – Vang Vieng – Nam Ngum Lake – Vientiane – Pakse – Bolaven Plateau – Wat Phou – Don Khong – Don Khone – Khone Phapheng – Pakse
This Laos highlights private tour runs the length of the country in twelve unhurried days. It starts with three nights in Luang Prabang, the old royal capital on the Mekong, where a private Baci blessing with a local family sets the tone, and continues with a Mekong boat trip to the Pak Ou Caves, the dawn alms procession and a swim below the turquoise tiers of Kuang Si.
From there the express train carries you south to the limestone peaks of Vang Vieng, then on to a lakeside night at Nam Ngum, where a sala boat takes you through the islands for a barbecue lunch. Vientiane comes next, with its golden stupa, quiet monasteries and the moving story told at the COPE center.
A short flight takes you to Pakse and the cool Bolaven Plateau, known for coffee, tea and waterfalls. You visit the pre-Angkorian temple of Wat Phou, a UNESCO site, then slow right down among the 4,000 Islands, with nights on Don Khong and Don Khone and a final stop at the thundering Khone Phapheng falls.
Easy to moderate. Most days mix sightseeing with two to four hours of walking, plus steps at Phousi Hill and a zipline at Green Jungle Park (you can walk the trails instead). Drives in the south are usually two to three hours. Well suited to active older travelers and families with children over 10.
Comfortable 4-star level throughout where available: Le Bel Air Resort in Luang Prabang, Tmark Resort in Vang Vieng, Sanctuary Nam Ngum Beach Resort on the lake, Eastin Hotel in Vientiane, Sinouk Coffee Resort on the Bolaven Plateau, Pon Arena on Don Khong, Seng Ahloune Resort on Don Khone and Athena Hotel in Pakse, or similar. Hotels in the far south are simpler, the best available on the islands.
The best time to visit is November to February, when days are dry, sunny and pleasantly cool, especially on the Bolaven Plateau. March and April are hot, and smoke from field burning can haze the northern views. From May to October the rains turn the country green; the Mekong rises and Khone Phapheng is at its most powerful, while the islets of Si Phan Don show best in the dry months.
Your guide and driver are yours alone for the whole trip, so the pace, the stops and the start time each morning follow you. The standard version has an English-speaking guide; guides who speak French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese or Vietnamese can be arranged on request.

Laos Highlights in 12 Days: Luang Prabang to the 4,000 Islands is a starting point. Our Hanoi travel designers adjust every day to your pace, interests and hotel style, then run the trip with your own guide and driver.
Your guide meets you at Luang Prabang airport and takes you to your hotel. After time to rest, take a first stroll through the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where gilded temples sit beside French-era villas on a peninsula between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. In the late afternoon you are welcomed into a local home for a private Baci ceremony. Elders tie white cotton strings around your wrists and offer blessings for a good journey, a gentle and very personal introduction to Lao life.

Start at the Royal Palace Museum, built in 1904 for King Sisavang Vong. Then board a boat and cruise up the Mekong past quiet villages to the Pak Ou Caves, two caves in a limestone cliff filled with thousands of Buddha images left by pilgrims. On the way, stop at Ban Xang Hai, known for its rice wine. Back in town, visit Wat Sene and Wat Xieng Thong, with its sweeping roofs and glass-mosaic tree of life. At Heuan Chan, a 19th-century heritage house, learn about Lao customs over coffee or tea. Watch sunset at Wat Phabath, then browse the night market.

Rise before dawn to watch saffron-robed monks walk the streets collecting alms, a tradition that goes back centuries. Your guide explains how to take part respectfully. Wander the morning market nearby, then return for breakfast. Climb the 329 steps of Phousi Hill for a view over rooftops and rivers, then drive into the hills to Kuang Si, where the water drops over limestone tiers into blue pools. Swim, or walk to the village of Ban Thapene and its quieter falls. On the way back, stop at Ock Pop Tock, a weaving center by the Mekong.
Overnight: Luang Prabang · Meals: B
Drive out of town to Green Jungle Park, a forest park on the road towards Kuang Si.
