Private tour with your own English-speaking guide · 12 days / 11 nights · Vientiane – Ban Thaheua (Nam Ngum Lake) – Vang Vieng – Luang Prabang – Namkhan Ecolodge – Luang Prabang

This Laos family tour is built around doing things together. It begins in Vientiane, where a tuk tuk takes you to an organic farm to plant or harvest rice, catch fish and cook your own Lao lunch. Then you head north to Nam Ngum Lake to cycle between fishing villages, and on to Vang Vieng, where limestone peaks hide caves you can explore on foot and by inner tube.

The express train carries you to Luang Prabang for the second half of the trip. Here the pace slows: a boat trip to the Pak Ou Caves, bamboo weaving and paper making at a heritage house, the dawn alms round, a dairy farm visit and a swim at Kuang Si Falls.

The finale is a night at Namkhan Ecolodge, a farm-to-table retreat on the Nam Khan River with kayaking, a private barbecue and a Lao cooking class. Travel days are short, there are no domestic flights and every day mixes activity with time to rest.

Who this trip suits

Easy to moderate and very family-friendly. Expect two to four hours of activity a day, including a short bike ride, a 2 km walk through rice fields, cave tubing and gentle kayaking. Drives are two to three hours at most and the Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang leg is by train. Best for families with children over 10 and grandparents who enjoy light activity.

Where you stay

4-star level where available: Eastin Hotel in Vientiane, Sanctuary Nam Ngum Beach Resort on the lake, Tmark Resort in Vang Vieng, Le Bel Air Resort in Luang Prabang and Namkhan Ecolodge (Namkhan Deluxe room) near the city, or similar.

Best time to go

November to February is ideal for families, with dry, sunny days and cool evenings. March to May is hot, so plan swims and cave visits for the middle of the day. In the green season from June to October, rice planting is in full swing on the farm, but Kuang Si and the Vang Vieng water cave can be cloudy or high after heavy rain.

Your guide, your language

Your guide and driver are yours alone for the whole trip, so the pace, the stops and the start time each morning follow you. The standard version has an English-speaking guide; guides who speak French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese or Vietnamese can be arranged on request.
