Why it is worth it

The resort opened in 1998 to a design by Heah and Co.: you enter across a bridge above the valley, over a rooftop lotus pond, then descend through tall trees and terraced rice paddies to the river. The 42 villas and 18 suites use natural, local materials; seven riverside suites were reimagined in 2026 by Hirsch Bedner Associates with hand-loomed textiles and dark teak. The Sacred River Spa covers about 4,970 square meters with seven spa villas and two yoga bales, and the dining runs from modern Indonesian at Ayung Terrace to Riverside's Mediterranean table and Sokasi's eight-seat Balinese dinner. The resort received a Michelin Key in 2025.

It is a valley resort: between the lobby, the villas, the spa and the river there are slopes and steps. Travelers in their 70s should ask for a suite in the main building close to the restaurants and spa. Families get the Pici Pici Kids Club, a daily cooking class and private rafting on the river.

Day 2Morning yoga at the Dharma Shanti bale, then Ubud's palace and market with your guide. Afternoon treatment at the Sacred River Spa.

DepartureBreakfast over the valley, then a private car to the airport or south to the coast.

How we fit it into your private trip

In Bali we usually give Sayan three nights at the start of the island stay, before the beach in the south, with a private car and guide for Ubud's temples and rice terraces. For families we add a night to use the kids club and the rafting. It also closes a longer trip: Bangkok or Vietnam first, then a direct flight to Denpasar and up into the valley.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Frequently asked questions

Is the resort suitable for travelers in their 70s?

Yes, if we choose the room well. The resort steps down a valley, so the walk from the bridge to the river villas involves slopes and stairs. The Premier suites in the main building sit near the restaurants and the Sacred River Spa, which is where we place guests who prefer short, level walks.

Can children stay, and what is there for them?

Yes. The resort runs the Pici Pici Kids Club daily from 9 am to 6 pm, a kids' cooking class at Sokasi and family rafting on the Ayung. The Premier Family Suites have a dedicated kids' room. We suggest children over 10 so they get the most from rafting, rice-field walks and temple visits.

How do we get there?

Fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, which has direct flights from Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. The resort is about 35 km north; we book a private car to meet you at arrivals. Traffic through Denpasar is slow, so we avoid late-evening arrivals where possible.

Is the rate per villa or per person?

Rates are per suite or villa per night, not per person. Your written quote shows the category, the number of nights and how the stay fits into the whole trip price. Price is confirmed in your written quote.
