In short

Aman Kyoto is a 26-key resort set in a forest garden in the Takagamine district of northern Kyoto, about 30 minutes by car from Kyoto Station and close to Kinkaku-ji. Two or three nights is usual. It suits couples who want a ryokan feeling with Aman service; families with older children fit the two-bedroom pavilions.

Why it is worth it

The resort evokes a ryokan in a secret garden at the foothills of Hidari Daimonji: latticed pavilions among trees, stone paths and moss. The 26 rooms, suites and pavilions start at 60 square meters; the Washigamine and Takagamine Pavilions have two bedrooms, and rooms such as Kaede look onto mature maples. The Aman Spa draws on mineral-rich spring water that rises nearby, with indoor and outdoor onsen bathing, three treatment rooms and forest bathing through the garden; every stay includes access to the onsen. Taka-An serves kaiseki, The Living Pavilion is the all-day room, and the Tea House Senkutsu hosts tea. Kinkaku-ji and sixteen other UNESCO sites are close.

This is a forest resort, not a downtown hotel: paths and stone steps run between pavilions, there is no pool or gym, and sightseeing means car time. Travelers in their 70s should ask for a room near the Living Pavilion. Onsen use is limited in numbers and reserved in advance, which keeps it quiet.

How we fit it into your private trip

We give Aman Kyoto two or three nights in the middle or at the end of a Japan trip, after Tokyo and often after Kanazawa or Takayama, with a private car and guide for the temples. Nara and Osaka are day trips. For couples it pairs naturally with Aman Tokyo; for a longer Asian trip, Kansai Airport connects directly to Hanoi and Bangkok.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Good to know

  • Takagamine district, northern Kyoto; about 30 minutes by car from Kyoto Station.
  • Osaka International Airport is about one hour by car; Kansai International about two hours, or 90 minutes by express train.
  • No gym or swimming pool; the onsen takes a limited number of guests at a time and must be reserved.
  • Autumn color in the garden peaks in November; summers are hot and humid.
  • 26 keys only, so spring and autumn dates should be fixed many months ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aman Kyoto suitable for travelers in their 70s?

Yes, with planning. The pavilions are spread through a forest garden with stone paths and steps, so we request a room near The Living Pavilion and the spa. The onsen is a gentle way to end a temple day. We use a private car for all sightseeing because the resort sits in the northern hills, away from the subway.

Can children stay at Aman Kyoto?

Aman Kyoto publishes no minimum age, and the two-bedroom Washigamine and Takagamine Pavilions suit a family of four. It is quiet and adult in mood, so we suggest it for children over 10 who enjoy temples, a tea ceremony and the garden. Onsen bathing follows Japanese etiquette; your guide explains it beforehand.

How do we get there?

From Tokyo, the bullet train to Kyoto takes a little over two hours; a private car then needs about 30 minutes to the resort. From abroad, Kansai International Airport is a 90-minute express train or about two hours by car, and Osaka International is about an hour. We book the car and send luggage ahead when useful.

Is the rate per room or per person?

Rates are per room or pavilion per night, not per person. Your written quote shows the category, the number of nights and how the stay fits into the whole trip price. Price is confirmed in your written quote.
