In short

The Eastern & Oriental Express is Belmond's sleeper train in Southeast Asia. Since its return in 2024 it runs round trips from Singapore's Woodlands station into Malaysia, three nights on the core journeys, with a guided visit to Taman Negara National Park and an excursion to Penang Island. It suits couples and small family groups who want a slow, well-fed few days between two city stays.

Why it is worth it

The train carries at most 64 guests in 32 cabins: 20 State Cabins, 10 Pullman Cabins and 2 Presidential Suites, each with its own bathroom and a cabin attendant on call around the clock. Dining is curated by chef André Chiang in two restaurant cars, with a daily four-course dinner, continental breakfast in your cabin, a three-course lunch and afternoon tea. There is a Piano Bar, an open-sided Observation Car and the first Dior Spa in Southeast Asia. Off the train the itineraries go into Taman Negara's rainforest and to George Town in Penang, with a choice of cultural immersions.

Cabins are compact (5.8 to 11.6 sqm), so travelers who like room to spread out should choose a State Cabin or Presidential Suite. The current routes are Singapore to Malaysia and back; the train no longer serves Bangkok. House wine, spirits and local beer are included; premium drinks and cabin service are extra.

How we fit it into your private trip

We build the train into a longer Asia trip rather than selling it alone. The usual shape is two nights in Singapore before departure, the three-night journey, then a flight from Singapore to Vietnam or Cambodia for the second half of the holiday with our own guides and cars. Belmond's transfers cover the station legs; we handle everything either side.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Good to know

  • Departs Singapore Woodlands station, about 40 minutes by car from the city center; Belmond includes the transfers.
  • Core journeys: Essence of Malaysia and Wild Malaysia, both three nights, Monday to Thursday. Festive and New Year departures run in December; Tiger Express is a six-night annual departure ending at The Datai Langkawi.
  • Cabin sizes: Pullman 5.8 sqm, State 7.8 sqm, Presidential Suite 11.6 sqm; all sleep two.
  • Included: all meals, house wine, house spirits and local beer, excursions and a 24-hour cabin attendant. Premium drinks and in-cabin orders are charged.
  • Departures are limited and sell early; we ask for dates six to twelve months ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Does the train still go to Bangkok?

No. Since the relaunch in 2024 the Eastern & Oriental Express runs round trips from Singapore into Malaysia and back. If you want Thailand on the same holiday, we add a flight from Singapore or Penang and continue with a private program there.

Which cabin should a couple in their 70s choose?

A State Cabin or a Presidential Suite. Pullman Cabins are the smallest and have an upper berth. All cabins have a private bathroom and an attendant on call, and the dining cars are a short walk through the train.

Is the price per person or per cabin?

Belmond quotes per adult, based on two sharing, with a different rate for sole occupancy. Price is confirmed in your written quote and depends on the journey, cabin type and date.

Can older children come?

Belmond does not publish a minimum age on the journey pages. The cabins are built for two, and the days are long and adult in pace. We check each request with the operator before confirming families.
