Quick answer

A Vietnamese cooking class is a hands-on session of roughly 3–4 hours in which you cook, then eat, classic dishes with a local cook in Hanoi, Hoi An or Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Metta Voyage books the class as a private session or in a small group, with an optional market visit and hotel transfer. The price depends on the city, the format and your group size (Price on request – reply within 24h); send us your date and number of guests and we will reply with a quote.

How to book in 4 steps

  1. 1Send your date and group size

    Fill in the form or message us on WhatsApp with your preferred date, the number of adults and children, and where you are staying. Mention any dietary needs or special requests at this point.

  2. 2Get a written quote

    We check real availability for your day and send the price per person, exactly what is included and the suggested time for your class.

  3. 3Confirm, with nothing paid upfront

    You pay nothing before you confirm the quote in writing. Any changes to timing, transport or extras are folded into the same quote.

  4. 4Enjoy the experience

    The day before, you receive the meeting point or pick-up time, and our team stays on hand 24/7 on WhatsApp in case anything changes.

Good to know / what to bring

  • Light clothes and closed shoes: kitchens and markets can be hot and humid.
  • Tell us about allergies, vegetarian diets or no-pork requests when you book.
  • Come hungry: you eat everything you cook.
  • A little cash in Vietnamese dong for small purchases at the market.
  • Children are welcome; tell us their ages so the cook can adapt tasks involving knives and heat.

Schedule and duration

Most classes run for 3 to 4 hours, including the meal. There are morning sessions (often with the market visit, when produce is freshest) and afternoon or early-evening sessions. Exact start times vary from kitchen to kitchen and city to city, so we confirm the slot available on your date in the quote.

What you will cook

The menu changes with the city and the class, but it usually covers three or four dishes that unlock how Vietnamese cooking works: the balance of salty fish sauce, sour lime, sweet palm sugar and a handful of fresh herbs. Typical examples, always to be confirmed because the menu depends on each class:

  • Phở, the rice-noodle soup with a fragrant broth that Hanoi is famous for;
  • Nem rán, crisp fried spring rolls from the north;
  • Bánh xèo, the crackling rice-and-turmeric pancake popular in the centre and south;
  • Gỏi cuốn, fresh summer rolls with prawns and herbs, plus the dipping sauce.

At the end you sit down to eat what you have made, and you leave with the recipes to try at home.

Hanoi, Hoi An or Ho Chi Minh City: which to choose

In Hanoi the class is a lovely introduction to the subtler cooking of the north and fits neatly around a day in the Old Quarter; see our Hanoi tours. In Hoi An kitchens often sit close to herb gardens and rice fields, and the morning market in the old town is a show in itself; pair it with a lantern-making workshop. In Ho Chi Minh City the class showcases the sweeter, herb-heavy flavours of the south and works well before an evening Saigon River dinner cruise.

Dietary needs and families

Vegetarian, no-pork, no-seafood or gluten-free cooking is possible when requested at booking. We do not offer religious kitchen certification, but we adapt the ingredients and brief the cook on exactly what to leave out. For families, a private class is the most relaxed option: children join the simpler steps, such as rolling fresh spring rolls, and nobody has to keep pace with strangers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to cook?

No. Classes are designed for beginners: the cook demonstrates each step and you repeat it at your own station.

Can I book a vegetarian class?

Yes. Tell us when you book and we adapt the menu; the same goes for no-pork diets and allergies.

Is the market visit always included?

No, it is optional and depends on the session. If it matters to you, ask for it in the quote and we will book a session with the market.

Can I take a class in more than one city?

Yes. Plenty of travellers do one in Hanoi and another in Hoi An to compare northern and central cooking.

How do I pay?

You only pay after confirming the quote. We send the payment options with your confirmation.
