Good to know / what to bring

  • Clothes you do not mind getting a little clay on; aprons are usually provided.
  • Clay dries on skin and nails, so leave rings and watches in your bag.
  • Fired pieces may be ready for collection later; whether this is possible depends on the workshop, so ask when you book.
  • Bring some cash in dong if you plan to buy ceramics in the village.
  • Children are welcome; tell us their ages when you book.

Schedule and duration

Plan on a half day in total: around 30–45 minutes each way by car from central Hanoi, plus time at the workbench and a stroll through the village. Morning and afternoon departures are both possible, and the trip fits easily before lunch or before an evening in the Old Quarter. We confirm the exact pick-up time in your quote.

What you will do in Bat Trang

Bat Trang has been making ceramics for centuries, and much of the village still works around family kilns and small studios. During the workshop you will usually:

  • Try the potter’s wheel — a craftsperson centres the clay and guides your hands as you raise a bowl or small vase;
  • Shape by hand — if the wheel is not for you, simple hand-moulding is a relaxed alternative, good for younger children;
  • Paint with glaze — decorate a ready-made piece with traditional blue patterns or your own design.

Afterwards there is time to wander the lanes, peek into workshops and browse the ceramic shops.

Taking your pottery home

Freshly made pieces need to dry and be fired in a kiln before they can travel. Depending on the workshop, it may be possible to collect fired work later or arrange delivery to your Hanoi hotel; this varies, so ask when you book and we will tell you what is possible for your dates. Glaze-painted pieces made on pre-fired ware can sometimes be ready sooner.

Building it into your Hanoi stay

Because the village is so close, the workshop slots easily into a Hanoi itinerary. Combine it with a Vietnamese cooking class for a day of hands-on experiences, or browse our Hanoi tours and day trips from Hanoi. Arriving at Noi Bai? Our Noi Bai airport fast track speeds you through arrivals.

Not necessarily, but a guide adds context about the village’s history and helps with shopping. It is optional.

When do I pay?

Only after you confirm the quote. Payment options come with your confirmation.
