What to see in Phong Nha and Quang Binh
Phong Nha Cave: reached by a wooden boat along the Son River, with the boat gliding into the cave itself.
Paradise Cave: huge chambers of stalactites and stalagmites along about a kilometre of boardwalk – the most comfortable cave visit for all ages.
Dark Cave and the Chay River: a more active half-day with kayaking, swimming and a muddy cave walk.
Son Doong and other expeditions: the world’s largest cave can only be visited on multi-day expeditions run by the licensed operator Oxalis Adventure, booked many months ahead.
Bong Lai valley: cycling between farms and village cafés on a slow afternoon.
When to go and how to get there
February to August is the best time: dry, with the caves and rivers open. September to November is the flood season, when some caves and boat trips close at short notice; December and January are cool and can be wet.
Fly to Dong Hoi from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, then drive about 45 minutes to Phong Nha. From Hue it is about three and a half to four hours by road; the north–south railway and the SJourney luxury train also stop at Dong Hoi.
