Quick answer

For two weeks in Vietnam with 4★ hotels, travelling independently costs roughly US$850–2,150 per person (our estimate from published prices, before international flights), a small-group tour costs about US$1,570–4,415 on the big operators’ sites, and a private tour with Metta Voyage starts from US$2,014 per person for 14 days (2 travellers sharing, 4★ hotels; price confirmed in your tailor-made quote).

Independent travel is cheapest if you enjoy planning; a group tour suits solo travellers who want company; a private tour suits couples and families who want their own pace, hotels and guide without doing the logistics.

Private Tour vs Group Tour vs Independent Travel in Vietnam: Costs Compared – Halong Bay | Metta Voyage

Most people planning a first trip to Vietnam end up comparing three options: book everything yourself, join a small-group tour, or have a local operator build a private trip around you. All three work well in Vietnam. The right choice depends less on the headline price than on how you like to travel, how much time you want to spend planning, and who is coming with you. This guide compares them for a typical two-week, north-to-south trip, using published prices checked on 26 October 2026.

How we built these numbers. Independent: our estimate for 12 hotel nights plus one night on a cruise, from these published sources: 4-star hotel averages from KAYAK (metasearch averages, around US$47–49 a night in Hanoi, US$48 in Hoi An and US$65–88 in Ho Chi Minh City; KAYAK Hanoi); Vietnam Airlines one-way “from” fares Hanoi–Da Nang and Da Nang–Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam Airlines); Halong Bay overnight cruises from US$330 per cabin (Paradise) and from US$423 per person (Heritage Line); restaurant and taxi prices from Numbeo; official ticket prices at the Temple of Literature, the Hue monuments, Hoi An and My Son; and the US$25 single-entry e-visa (Vietnam Immigration Department). Group: “from” prices shown on 26 October 2026 for 13–15 day Vietnam trips by Intrepid, G Adventures and Exodus, several of them discounted. Travelling independently

Vietnam is one of the easier countries in Asia to travel on your own: domestic flights are frequent, Grab works in the big cities, and hotels and cruises can be booked online. It is the cheapest way to go if you enjoy planning and do not mind sorting out problems yourself.

The trade-offs are time and context. Two weeks across a country 1,600 km long means about ten transfers, and every one is yours to book and time. Without a guide, the Hue citadel, the Cu Chi Tunnels or a village in the Mekong Delta are pleasant but harder to understand, and a delayed flight or a cancelled cruise because of weather becomes your problem to fix.

Choose it if: you are confident, flexible and travelling on a tight budget, and you enjoy the planning as part of the trip.

Joining a small-group tour

Group tours from international operators bundle hotels, transport, a tour leader and many sights into one price, usually for 10–16 travellers on fixed dates. They are a good choice for solo travellers who want company and a safety net, and the per-person price can be attractive, especially with last-minute discounts.

The trade-offs: the itinerary, the hotels and the pace are set for the group, early starts are common, and many meals are not included. Hotel standards vary by range, so check whether “comfort” or “premium” applies before comparing prices.

Choose it if: you are travelling alone or as a couple who enjoys meeting other people, and the set dates and route suit you.

Travelling on a private tour

On a private tour a local operator plans the route with you, books every hotel, cruise and flight, and gives you your own guide and driver in each region. Nothing is shared with strangers: you choose the dates, how early you start and how long you stay in each place. For couples and families, especially with older children or grandparents, this is usually the most comfortable way to see a lot of Vietnam in two or three weeks.

The trade-off is price for small parties: the car and guide cost the same for two people as for four, so two travellers pay more per person than four. Our private Vietnam tour cost guide explains how the price is built.

Choose it if: you want your own pace and hotels, have limited holiday time, travel with family, or simply prefer not to handle the logistics.

Which one should you choose?

  • Tightest budget, plenty of time, enjoy planning: independent.
  • Travelling solo and want company: a small-group tour.
  • Couple, family or friends who want flexibility and comfort: a private tour.
  • Mixed: many travellers book a private core trip (north and centre, where guides add the most) and keep a few free days at the beach on their own.

If a private trip sounds right, start with one of our itineraries and we will change it until it fits: 12 days in depth (from US$2,344), 14 days north to south (from US$2,014) or 14 days Vietnam and Cambodia (from US$2,341), all per person based on 2 travellers sharing in 4★ hotels.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private tour in Vietnam worth it compared to a group tour?

For couples and families it often is: you get your own guide and driver, choose the hotels and pace, and can travel on any date. For solo travellers on a budget, a small-group tour is usually better value.

How much does a 2-week trip to Vietnam cost per person?

Excluding international flights and with 4★ hotels shared by two, roughly US$850–2,150 independently (our estimate), about US$1,570–4,415 on a small-group tour, and from US$2,014 on our 14-day private tour.

Is it cheaper to travel Vietnam independently?

Usually yes in cash terms, because you pay no guide, private car or planning. The difference narrows when you add the cost of a good cruise, airport transfers and the occasional private guide for the main sights.

How big are group tours in Vietnam?

The operators we compared list a maximum of 12 to 16 travellers. On a private tour, the group is only your own party.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

Many nationalities need one. The official e-visa costs US$25 for single entry and US$50 for multiple entry and can be valid for up to 90 days; apply only through the official government website.
