Best Place To Visit In Cambodia

Best time to visit Phnom Penh

The best time to visit Phnom Penh by season

  • From March to May: At this time, the weather is a bit hot, the temperature rises to about 35-40 degrees Celsius, but there is little rain and there are traditional festivals and special cultural activities.

  • December to February next year: At this time in Cambodia, there is an active Northeast Monsoon, so the climate is quite pleasant, cool and less rainy. This time is very suitable to visit and explore entertainment spots in Cambodia.

FAQ

Dry season

The dry season lasts from November to May, which includes cool season and hot season.

Cool-season

The cool season begins in November and ends in February. This is the best time to travel to Cambodia when the weather is most favorable. The temperature ranges from 21 – 30 Celsius degrees. It is the perfect weather to relax on the beach, or take a hike in the dense jungles of Cambodia.

If you want to experience cruising on the Mekong River, it is recommended to travel between November and January in the dry season.

Nice weather also means that this is the high season of Cambodia with huge mobs of tourists. Destinations are likely to be filled with travelers. As a result, booking might be harder and prices are higher. If you want to visit Cambodia in this season, remember to book in advance.

Hot season

The hot season lasts from March to June. The weather is extremely hot and humid. This might be the worst time to visit Cambodia with temperatures that can get up to 35 – 40 Celsius degrees. Humidity makes it so annoying to walk along the streets, visit the temples and go on a hike.

If you have no problems with summer heat, you can try exploring Cambodia in this extreme heat.

Wet season

Starting in May and ending in October, the wet season is truly… wet. Rains can fall up to 20 days in a single month. However, it’s not that bad as a shower often lasts for one hour or so. Just remember to bring an umbrella or poncho with you.

Travelers are not recommended to travel between mid-September to October as remote roads of Cambodia can be flooded in this season.

During the rainy season, you can choose to visit Cambodia between June and early September when there are not too many rains and the temperature is lower than 30 Celsius degrees. There are not too many visitors during this season so take your chance to explore temples and visit the Tonle Sap Lake.

Cambodia’s climate, which has two seasons of rain and dryness, is comparable to that of southern Vietnam. May through October is the wet season, whereas November through March is dry and sunny.

Therefore, November through February of each year is the best time to visit Cambodia. This period is ideal for sightseeing. Visitors can take part in boat races and water festivals, especially starting in mid-November. Visitors should schedule their trip during April if they wish to enjoy the traditional Tet of Khmer Cambodia.

Within Cambodia

The quickest way to get around the country is by air travel. There are various domestic flights between major cities such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Battambang.

Within the city

Public buses only operate in Phnom Penh. In other cities, you can opt for a tuk-tuk, mood up (a small motorcycle taxi), train, and boat.

  1. Angkor Wat

Used to be the capital of the Khmer empire of King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat is an ancient city dating back to the 12th century. The city covered more than 400 kilometers, making it the largest pre-industrial city in history. Some suggested that the population of this city could have been around one million people.

For a long time, it was a big mystery how the Angkor empire collapsed in the early 15th century. Now, researchers concluded that intense monsoon rains and drought caused damage to this city.

Today, Angkor Wat is now known as the Angkor Archaeological Park with amazing temples and buildings. The most popular temples are Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, and Angkor Thom. Although this place is only the remnants of the great Angkor Wat, it is still quite big. A multi-day pass is recommended.

Angkor Wat

As the largest Asian pyramid, Angkor Wat is over 200 feet tall. There are different layers in this temple. This is also the biggest building of the Angkor Archaeological Park complex. The historical site actually gets its name from this temple. The central temple has 2600 feet of bas-reliefs.

The Bayon

The Bayon is located in the center of Angkor Thom. There are 54 towers and 216 faces of Avalokiteshvara engraved in this temple. Bayon has divided into 3 levels: the first 2 ones are rectangular while the third level is circular.

Ta Prohm

Ta Prohm is still exactly as they found it as archeologists left it untouched. They only strengthened the structure to prevent deterioration. That is why Ta Prohm is called the capital of the kingdom of the Trees.

Banteay Srei

Banteay Srei means “Citadel of the Women”. It is said that this temple was built by women as the carvings are too elaborate and fine for the hand of a man. Many of Banteay Srei’s carvings are three-dimensional Shiva.

  1. Koh Ker

For a short time from 928 to 944 AD, Koh Ker was the capital of the Khmer empire. Koh Ker houses Prasat Thom which is a 30-meter-tall temple pyramid rising high above the surrounding forest. On top is a giant Garuda (half-man, half-bird creature) carved into the rock.

Koh Ker was one of the most inaccessible and remote temples in Cambodia. Thanks to the opening of a new road, it is now a lot easier to explore this building complex.

  1. Tonle Sap

As the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, Tonle Sap is 250 km in length and 100 km across at its widest point. This “inland ocean” enlarges and shrinks dramatically when the season changes. Tonle Sap is home to many ethnic Vietnamese and some Cham communities living in floating villages.

  1. Kratie

Located on the banks of the Mekong River, Kratie is a small town with an expansive riverfront and the best Mekong sunsets in Cambodia. Irrawaddy dolphins are the attractions of this riverside town. There are not too many dolphins of this species inhabiting this place. The architecture of Kratie is somehow French.

  1. Neak Pan

Neak Pan is a small temple consisting of five ponds. The central pond is a representation of Lake Anavatapta in the Himalayas. The orientation of the ponds at Neak Pean ensured that the water was always fresh because the pods received only reflected light.

Fish amok

Fish amok is considered the signature dish of Cambodia. Diced fillets of freshwater fish are cooked in coconut milk, eggs, fish sauce, and palm sugar. After, locals will add a paste called kroeung and made from pounded spices and other ingredients such as turmeric, kaffir lime, lemongrass, and shallots.

The dish will be steamed in a banana leaf shaped into a bowl.

Kuy teav

This is a very popular street food in Cambodia. This is actually noodle soup made from pork or beef bones and rice vermicelli. The broth is flavorful with fried shallots and garlic, bean sprouts, green onion, and aromatic herbs. This dish is served with fish or pork balls. You can add chili paste, half a lime, and some hoisin sauce if you like.

Beef loc lac

With stir-fried strips of tender beef served with a bed of lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and rings of raw onions, beef loc lac is also a signature dish of Cambodia. Most of the time, there will be a fried egg on top. The star of this dish is the dipping sauce of lime juice and pepper.

Visitors can obtain a visa for Cambodia upon arrival at the airport or at overland border crossings. It is also possible to apply for an e-visa online before arriving in the country.

It depends on how much time you have and what you want to see and do. A typical tour of Cambodia can range from 3-7 days, but some people may choose to stay for longer.

  • Compared to Vietnam, Cambodia does not have as many taxis. Guests can pre-arrange the cost of a cab by the day or by the session.
  • Prices are often inflated 2 to 3 times the actual price, so this is definitely not the ideal place to shop. Tourists should only withdraw their wallets when they need to buy food or small souvenirs.
  • Tourists absolutely do not pat children’s heads because according to the concept of indigenous people, it is a place where only parents can touch.
  • Visitors should also not give things with their left hand because according to Cambodians, the left hand is often “not clean“.
  • When visiting the temple, please choose modest clothes to show respect for the local culture.
  • Visitors should also avoid approaching or touching the monks

The 1958 construction of the Independence Monument marked the ninth anniversary of Cambodia‘s liberation from French colonial authority. The Angkor Wat temple complex and a few other monuments served as inspiration for the construction of the monument.

  • Golden Temple (Silver Temple):

Inside the Royal Palace Complex in Phnom Penh, there is a pagoda separated by a wall, commonly known as the Silver Pagoda. The Silver Pagoda is located at the southern entrance of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh.

The official name of the Silver Pagoda is Preah Vihear Preah Keo Morakot or Wat Preah Keo, which means Temple of the Emerald Buddha. In the temple is an extremely rare Emerald statue; there are only 5 such statues in the world. The size of this statue is quite small; it is only about 60cm high and made entirely of precious green jade.

For Western tourists, they often call this pagoda the Silver Pagoda because the pagoda has more than 5000 floor tiles made from solid silver, each weighing about 1kg.

Meanwhile, Asian tourists prefer to call this the Golden Temple, because at the temple there is a statue of the future Buddha in pure gold weighing nearly 90kg. • Flower garden

The flower garden located in the palace is home to many rare and valuable plants. Right at the entrance, you can immediately see the sala tree, the tree of Buddha Shakyamuni.
