Private tour with your own English-speaking guide · 9 days / 8 nights · Phnom Penh – Siem Reap – Angkor – Tonle Sap – Sihanoukville – Koh Rong

This Cambodia and Koh Rong private tour gives you the country's essentials in a sensible order, then lets you stop. You start in Phnom Penh with the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda and an honest, guided look at the Khmer Rouge years. A short flight takes you to Siem Reap, where a monk blessing, an Apsara dinner and a full day at Angkor, from sunrise to sunset, fill the next 48 hours.

On the last Siem Reap morning you take a boat onto the Tonle Sap, the great lake that feeds much of Cambodia, before flying to the coast. A speedboat carries you to Koh Rong, and from there the plan is simple: four nights of white sand, clear water and no alarm clock.

Your guide and driver are yours alone on every touring day, so the pace bends to you. It suits couples, honeymooners and families with teenagers who want Angkor done well and a proper rest before the flight home.

Who this trip suits

Easy to moderate. Temple days involve two to three hours of walking on uneven stone and some steep steps, with an early start for sunrise. The final transfer from Koh Rong to Phnom Penh airport takes four to five hours by boat and road. Good for couples, older travelers and families with children over 10.

Where you stay

Comfortable 4-star hotels throughout: Anik Palace in Phnom Penh, Saem Siem Reap in Siem Reap and Anaya Hotel on Koh Rong, or similar. Upgrades to 5-star properties are available on request.

Best time to go

November to April is the best time for this route: dry, sunny and with calm seas around Koh Rong. May to October brings afternoon showers and rougher water on the island crossings, though Angkor is greener and quieter. The Tonle Sap floating villages look their best from August to January, when the water is high.

Your guide, your language

Your guide and driver are yours alone for the whole trip, so the pace, the stops and the start time each morning follow you. The standard version has an English-speaking guide; guides who speak French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese or Vietnamese can be arranged on request.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Phnom Penh

Your guide and driver meet you at Phnom Penh airport and take you to your hotel in the city center. After time to settle in and rest, your guide picks you up again for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant, a relaxed first taste of Khmer cooking and a chance to talk through the days ahead.

Overnight: Phnom Penh · Meals: D

Day 2 Royal Palace, Wat Phnom and Cambodia's recent history

Start at the Royal Palace, still the home of the King, and the Silver Pagoda next door, with its floor of silver tiles and treasured Buddha statues. Climb the steps of Wat Phnom, the hilltop temple that gave the capital its name. After lunch, your guide leads a thoughtful visit to Tuol Sleng Museum, the former S-21 prison, and the memorial at Choeung Ek. It is a sobering afternoon, and an important one for understanding modern Cambodia.

Overnight: Phnom Penh · Meals: B, L

Day 3 Fly to Siem Reap: tuk-tuk ride, monk blessing and Apsara dinner

Enjoy a free morning before your transfer to the airport for the short flight to Siem Reap, gateway to the temples of Angkor. Your local guide meets you and takes you to the hotel. Later, hop into a tuk-tuk for a breezy ride through the villages on the edge of town, ending at a pagoda where Buddhist monks offer a traditional blessing for happiness and good fortune. Tonight, dinner comes with a performance of classical Apsara dance.

Overnight: Siem Reap · Meals: B, D

Day 4 Angkor from sunrise to sunset

Rise early to watch the sun come up behind the towers of Angkor Wat, then return to the hotel for breakfast. Back in the park, explore Angkor Wat itself, built for King Suryavarman II in the 12th century. Pass through the South Gate of Angkor Thom to the Bayon and its calm stone faces, the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of the Leper King and the long corridors of Preah Khan. After lunch, wander Ta Prohm, where giant fig roots grip the walls, and end the day with sunset at Pre Rup.

Overnight: Siem Reap · Meals: B, L

Day 5 Tonle Sap floating village, then fly to the coast for Koh Rong

Spend your last Siem Reap morning on the Tonle Sap. A boat takes you through a floating village where houses, schools and shops rise and fall with the lake. Stop at the Artisans d'Angkor workshops to watch young Cambodians carve stone and wood using traditional methods. Then transfer to the airport for your flight to Sihanoukville. On arrival you are taken to the pier for the speedboat to Koh Rong and your beach hotel.

Overnight: Koh Rong · Meals: B

Day 6 Free day on Koh Rong

The day is yours. Swim in clear water, read in the shade of the palms, or walk the long, quiet beaches that make Koh Rong such a contrast to the cities. Your hotel can help with snorkeling or kayak hire if you want to be more active. There is no guide today and nothing on the schedule, which is exactly the point.

Overnight: Koh Rong · Meals: B

Day 7 Free day on Koh Rong

Another unhurried island day. Many guests use it for a lazy morning, a long lunch by the sea and a sunset swim. If you like a little structure, ask the hotel about boat trips to nearby beaches and coves. Otherwise, simply enjoy the slower rhythm of island life and the chance to rest after the busy temple days.

Overnight: Koh Rong · Meals: B

Day 8 Free day on Koh Rong

Your final full day by the sea. Take one more swim, book a massage, or explore a different stretch of sand. In the evening, watch the light fade over the Gulf of Thailand and enjoy a last dinner on the island at your own pace. Pack the night before, as tomorrow begins with the boat back to the mainland.

Overnight: Koh Rong · Meals: B

Day 9 Koh Rong to Phnom Penh airport and departure

After breakfast, take the speedboat back to Sihanoukville, where your private driver is waiting. The road journey to Phnom Penh international airport takes about four to five hours, with comfort stops on the way. Your driver drops you at the terminal in time for your onward flight. This transfer is with a driver only.
