Private tour with your own English-speaking guide · 9 days / 8 nights · Bangkok – Damnoen Saduak – Kanchanaburi – Ayutthaya – Chiang Mai – Doi Inthanon – Chiang Rai – Golden Triangle – Bangkok
This northern Thailand private tour packs the country's best-known cultural sights into nine well-paced days. You begin in Bangkok with the Golden Buddha, the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, then head west to Kanchanaburi to ride the Death Railway and stand on the Bridge on the River Kwai. On the way north you walk through the ruins of Ayutthaya and the royal summer palace at Bang Pa-In.
An overnight sleeper train carries you to Chiang Mai, where hilltop Doi Suthep, the old city temples and a traditional khantoke dinner set the tone for the north. A full day on Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand, brings cool air, waterfalls and royal gardens. Chiang Rai adds its striking White and Blue Temples, then the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet on the Mekong.
Your guide and driver are private on every touring day, so you can linger where you like. A short flight returns you to Bangkok for your last night before heading home.
Easy to moderate. Most days mix sightseeing on foot with comfortable drives of two to four hours; Doi Inthanon includes a short nature trail and Doi Suthep has 306 steps (a cable car is available). One night is spent on the sleeper train. Well suited to couples, active older travelers and families with children over 10.
Comfortable 4-star hotels: Nouvo City Hotel in Bangkok, Felix River Kwai Resort in Kanchanaburi, The Empress in Chiang Mai and Laluna Hotel and Resort in Chiang Rai, or similar. Night 4 is spent in a sleeper cabin on the train to Chiang Mai. Upgrades to 5-star hotels are available on request.
November to February is the best time for this route, with dry, sunny days and cool mornings in the north, especially on Doi Inthanon. March to May is hot, and late-season burning can leave a haze over Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. June to October brings green landscapes and short tropical downpours, with fewer visitors.
Your guide and driver are yours alone for the whole trip, so the pace, the stops and the start time each morning follow you. The standard version has an English-speaking guide; guides who speak French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese or Vietnamese can be arranged on request.

Your private guide and driver meet you at Bangkok airport and take you to your hotel. In the afternoon, set out on a temple tour that covers three very different sides of Thai Buddhism. At Wat Traimit you see the solid gold Buddha, more than five tons of it. At Wat Pho, the 46-meter Reclining Buddha fills its hall, and the temple is known as the home of traditional Thai massage. Finish at Wat Benchamabophit, the Marble Temple, built from Italian Carrara marble in classic Thai style.

Back in Bangkok, explore the Grand Palace, home of the Chakri kings since 1782, and Wat Phra Kaew with the revered Emerald Buddha. Shoulders and knees must be covered.
