Quick answer

In November, the north is cool, dry and clear; the south enters its dry season; Phu Quoc becomes calm and sunny. Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang) is usually at the peak of its rainy season, with a real risk of flooding. A north-plus-south route works very well; keep the centre short and flexible.

Vietnam in November: Weather by Region and Where to Go – Mekong | Metta Voyage

November is a turning point. The north settles into its driest, clearest weeks, the south leaves the rainy season behind, and the islands of the far south come into their own. Only central Vietnam needs caution.

Weather by region

Region November weather Our advice
North (Hanoi, Halong, Ninh Binh) Cool, dry and clear; evenings cooler Excellent
Northern mountains (Sapa, Ha Giang) Dry and cool, cold at night Excellent, bring warm layers
Centre (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang) Usually the wettest month; flooding possible Keep it short and flexible
South (Saigon, Mekong Delta) Rains ending, warm Very good
Phu Quoc Dry season begins, calmer seas Good, improving through the month

Weather varies by year. See how we plan around the typhoon season and Vietnam in October.

Where to go

  • Hanoi and Halong Bay: clear, comfortable weather; see Halong Bay in autumn.
  • Ha Giang: the buckwheat flowers continue into November; see Ha Giang’s buckwheat season.
  • Saigon and the Mekong: the dry season begins; see southern Vietnam’s dry season.
  • A beach: Phu Quoc rather than Hoi An or Nha Trang; see the best beach to end a Vietnam trip.

Central Vietnam in November

Hue and Hoi An can still be visited, but we plan carefully: a short stay, hotels outside the lowest-lying streets of Hoi An, indoor alternatives such as cooking classes, and flexible flights. If Hoi An is a priority, March to August is better. See central Vietnam in the rainy season.

Practical tips

  • Pack warm layers for the north and the mountains, light clothes for the south.
  • Book Halong cruises and Ha Giang stays early.
  • Combine with Cambodia, which begins its dry season; see Cambodia’s festivals.

Where to go and where to think twice in November

Good choices in November:

  • Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay in some of their best weather
  • Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc as the dry season begins
  • Ha Giang for buckwheat flowers

Think twice about:

  • Long stays in Hue and Hoi An: November is still peak flood season
  • Beach time on the central coast
  • Fixed onward connections from central Vietnam on the same day

How we split a two-week November trip: four or five nights in the north while the skies are clear (Hanoi, Ninh Binh and a Halong Bay cruise), a short, flexible stay in Hoi An or Hue, then Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and three or four nights on Phu Quoc as the dry season begins. If central Vietnam gets heavy rain, we can swap a day in Hue for an extra day in Hoi An, or move you south early. Travellers who mainly want sunshine can skip the centre altogether and add Cambodia or more beach time instead.

Dates to note in November

  • 22 November 2026 and 11 November 2027: full-moon Legend Nights in Hoi An.
  • 20 November: Vietnamese Teachers’ Day.
  • All month: buckwheat flowers in Ha Giang and clear autumn days in Hanoi.
