Quick answer

February is a good month for Vietnam if you plan around Tet, which falls on 6 February 2027. The north is cool, often grey and drizzly; the centre is drying out and mild; the south and Phu Quoc are hot, dry and sunny. After Tet come the spring festivals, from the Perfume Pagoda to Lim.

Vietnam in February: Weather by Region, Tet and the Spring Festivals | Metta Voyage

February is the start of spring in the Vietnamese calendar, and in 2027 it is dominated by Tet, the Lunar New Year, on 6 February. It is also the month when the weather is at its most varied: cool and misty in the north, mild in the centre and hot and dry in the south. With the right route, it is one of the most rewarding months to travel.

Weather by region in February

Region Typical weather Our view
Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay Cool, around 15–20°C, humid, frequent drizzle and mist Atmospheric; pack layers and a light waterproof
Sapa and the far north Cold, especially at night; mist common, occasional frost on the peaks Beautiful blossom, but dress warmly
Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang Mild, drying out after the rainy season; some showers early in the month Pleasant for sightseeing; the sea is still cool
Nha Trang and the south-central coast Dry, warm and sunny Good beach weather
Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Dry and hot, around 30–33°C Plan outings for the morning
Phu Quoc Dry season, calm sea, sunny One of the best months for the island

For the month before, see Vietnam in January; for the bay itself, Ha Long Bay in winter.

Tet on 6 February 2027

The days before Tet are the most colourful of the year: flower markets, red decorations and streets full of people shopping for the holiday. On New Year’s Eve, Friday 5 February, families gather and the big cities hold fireworks at midnight. On the first days of the new year, many shops, restaurants and smaller museums close and transport is fully booked; from about the fourth or fifth day, life returns to normal. Our guide to how Tet affects your trip explains the details, and our private Tet itinerary shows a route that works around it.

Spring festivals after Tet

Festival Where Lunar date Around (2027)
Perfume Pagoda Festival opens Huong Son, south-west of Hanoi 6th day of the 1st month 11 February
Yen Tu Festival opens Yen Tu mountain, Quang Ninh 10th day of the 1st month 15 February
Lim Festival Bac Ninh 13th day of the 1st month 18 February
Lantern Festival (full moon) Across Vietnam; lanterns in Hoi An 15th day of the 1st month 20 February

Dates are calculated from the lunar calendar and can differ by a day; the Perfume Pagoda and Yen Tu pilgrimage seasons continue for weeks after they open. Read our guide to the Lim Festival, famous for its Quan Ho singing.

Where to go in February

  • North: Hanoi before Tet, blossom in the mountains; see northern Vietnam in spring.
  • Centre: Hue and Hoi An are increasingly dry and pleasant; the end of the rainy season is covered in central Vietnam in the rainy season.
  • South: Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and the islands are at their sunniest; see the best time to visit Phu Quoc.

  • Light, breathable clothes and sun protection for the south
  • Modest clothing for pagodas, which are busiest during the festival season

Booking a February trip

Around Tet, flights, trains, hotels and cruises fill early and charge holiday rates. If your dates are flexible, the second half of February is calmer, and you still catch the spring festivals. Our travel designers can build a north-to-south route that matches each region to the best part of the month. Contact us with your dates.

Where to go and where to think twice in February

Good choices in February:

  • Hanoi and the northern countryside after Tet, for spring festivals and blossom
  • Hoi An and Hue, which enter their dry season
  • Saigon, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc for guaranteed sunshine

Think twice about:

  • Long transfers on Tet Eve (5 February 2027) and the first days of the new year, when many shops close and transport is full
  • Swimming in the north: Halong Bay is cool and often hazy
  • Booking late: domestic flights around Tet sell out weeks ahead

Dates to note in February 2027

  • 6 February 2027: Lunar New Year’s Day (Tet). The official public-holiday dates around it are set by the government each year, so check before travel.
  • 11 February 2027: the Perfume Pagoda pilgrimage season officially opens on the 6th day of the first lunar month and runs into spring.
  • 19 February 2027: full-moon Legend Night in Hoi An.
  • 20 February 2027: the first full moon of the lunar year (Tet Nguyen Tieu), a busy day at pagodas across Vietnam.

Lunar-calendar dates are calculated for Vietnam’s time zone. Event programmes change from year to year, so check before travel.

None of these quite right? Every Metta Voyage tour is private, so we can shorten it, add beach days or change the hotel level. You can also browse all our Vietnam tours.

What a February trip costs

Our published “from” prices for a private Vietnam tour are about US$140 per person per day at Comfort (4★) level, US$180 at Superior, US$250 at Deluxe and US$350 at Luxury. They assume 2 travellers sharing a room and include a private guide and driver, hotels and the activities listed in the itinerary (see our Vietnam tour cost guide). A 10-day February trip at Superior level starts at about US$1,800 per person; at Deluxe level it is about US$2,500. International flights, visas, insurance and tips are extra. Hotels and flights around Tet cost more and sell out early, so we price Tet dates individually in your quote. Final prices and hotels are confirmed in your quote, subject to availability.
