If a traveller asks us for the one month that works everywhere in Vietnam, March is near the top of our list. Winter has eased in the north, the central coast is past its rains and the south is still in its dry season. There are trade-offs, but few.
March weather at a glance
| Region | What to expect in March | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi, Ninh Binh | Mild and warming; often humid with hazy skies or light drizzle | Good |
| Halong Bay | Mild; mist and haze can soften the views | Good, with atmospheric light |
| Sapa, Ha Giang | Cool, with spring blossom in places | Good for walking |
| Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang | Dry and pleasant; sea warming | Very good |
| Nha Trang | Dry and sunny | Very good |
| Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta | Hot and dry | Good; plan for the heat |
| Phu Quoc | Dry season, calm west coast | Very good |
North: soft light and spring
Spring in the north brings milder days and a fresh green to the rice fields of Ninh Binh. The sky is often pale and hazy, and on Halong Bay the limestone islands can appear in layers of mist. Photographers love it; travellers expecting blue skies should know what to expect. In the mountains, March is a good walking month, cooler than summer and warmer than winter.
Centre: the start of the best season
By March the rains in Hue and Hoi An are long gone. Days are warm without being oppressive, which makes cycling around Hoi An’s countryside and exploring Hue’s tombs a pleasure. It is also when the beach season on the central coast begins in earnest. See our central Vietnam itineraries for ideas.

South: hot and dry
March is late in the dry season in the south, and temperatures climb. We plan sightseeing in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta in the morning and late afternoon, with time at the hotel pool in between. Phu Quoc remains excellent for a beach finish.
Crowds and booking
Good weather across the country makes March popular with international travellers, and some years it overlaps with Easter holidays. Cruise cabins, boutique hotels in Hoi An and beach resorts fill early. Our advice on how far in advance to book applies: three to six months ahead is comfortable.
A March route we like
- Hanoi (2–3 nights) with Ninh Binh.
- Halong or Lan Ha Bay (1–2 nights).
- Hue (2 nights) and Hoi An (3 nights).
- Ho Chi Minh City (2 nights) and the Mekong Delta (1 night).
- Optional beach: Phu Quoc or the central coast (3 nights).
What to pack
Light layers and a light jacket for the north, summer clothes for the centre and south, sun protection everywhere and something to cover shoulders and knees for temples; see what to wear in Vietnam. For other months, read our month-by-month guide.

Where to go and where to think twice in March
Good choices in March:
