Quick answer

For a gala dinner in Vietnam, the most memorable settings are the deck of a cruise on Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay, a riverside space in Hoi An’s old town, and a resort beach in Da Nang or Phu Quoc. Large groups often use a resort ballroom with a cultural performance. Always keep a covered plan B.

The gala dinner is usually the moment people remember from a group trip: speeches, awards, a setting that feels special. In Vietnam the choice comes down to four types of venue, each with its own strengths and constraints.

Four settings compared

Setting Feel Group size Watch out for
Cruise deck, Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay Sunset over limestone islands One ship for smaller groups; a chartered day cruise for larger ones Weather and sea conditions; storm season monitoring
Hoi An old town Lanterns, river, heritage houses Small to medium Permissions, noise limits and space in the heritage area
Resort beach, Da Nang or Phu Quoc Open air, sea breeze, stage on the sand Medium to large Wind and rain; central coast rains roughly September–December
Hanoi hotel ballroom or heritage venue Elegant, weatherproof Any size Less “wow” unless the theme and performance are strong

Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay

A dinner on deck as the light fades over the bay is hard to beat. Groups that fit one or two ships can stay overnight; larger groups can stay in a bay-side hotel and charter a cruise for the evening. We follow the weather forecast closely and keep the dining room on board, or a hotel venue, as the alternative.

Hoi An

Hoi An’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. An evening there, with lanterns along the river, is the natural setting for a smaller gala or a private dinner after an awards ceremony at the resort. We check what is permitted for the specific venue and keep amplified sound modest. Our Hoi An season guide helps with dates.

Beach resorts

Resorts in Da Nang and Phu Quoc can set a stage on the beach or the lawn, with a ballroom as plan B. This is the easiest format for large groups because guests walk from their rooms.

What goes into a good gala

  • A short programme: welcome, awards, one cultural performance, music.
  • An MC, decoration in the company’s colours, photo and video.
  • Menus agreed in advance, with halal, kosher, vegetarian and allergy options on request.
  • Sound, lighting and LED screens tested in the afternoon.
  • Transport back to the hotel planned in waves.
