Inle Lake sits in the hills of Shan State, about 900 metres above sea level, surrounded by blue mountains. Its villages are built on stilts over the water, its gardens float, and its fishermen row with one leg while balancing on the stern of their boats to keep their hands free for the conical nets. For many travellers it is the quiet counterpoint to the temples of Bagan.

What to see around the lake

A day on the lake is spent in a long, narrow wooden boat. Typical stops include the stilt villages of the Intha people, the floating tomato gardens anchored to the lake bed, silk and lotus-fibre weaving workshops, silversmiths and the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the most venerated site on the lake. On the western shore, the ruins of In Dein, with hundreds of old stupas half hidden in bamboo, are reached through a narrow creek.

Markets and the hills

Five-day rotating markets move between villages around the lake; hill-tribe people come down to trade vegetables, tea and household goods. Around the town of Nyaungshwe, cycling paths lead past rice fields to a winery and monasteries, and the hills above the lake are popular for walks to Pa-O villages.

How long to stay

Two nights are the minimum to enjoy a full day on the lake without rushing; three nights add a market day, cycling around Nyaungshwe or a walk in the hills. Lakeside hotels on stilts are part of the experience, while Nyaungshwe offers more choice of guesthouses and restaurants.

When people usually visit

From November to February the mornings are cool and misty, sometimes cold, with sunny days. March to May is warmer and drier, and the rainy season brings green hills and fewer visitors.

Myanmar in 2026: what to know before planning

  • Government travel advice (checked 26 October 2026): the UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay Region, which includes Bagan, and to southern Shan State, which includes Inle Lake, and against all travel to several other areas; the US rates Myanmar Level 4 and Australia says do not travel. Read the current advice from GOV.UK, the US State Department or Smartraveller.
  • Entry: the official tourist e-visa portal, evisa.moip.gov.mm, is online. Regional airlines including Myanmar Airways International, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways fly to Yangon.
  • Heritage sites: a joint ICOMOS–UNESCO mission recorded significant damage from the March 2025 earthquake at Mandalay, Amarapura, Innwa, Sagaing and Mingun. Local media report that some villages and hotels around Inle Lake were still being repaired a year later.
  • Our position: Metta Voyage is not taking Myanmar bookings at present. Register below and we will contact you when official advice allows us to operate again.
