Quick answer

The newest luxury hotels in Thailand for a 2027 trip are in Bangkok: Aman Nai Lert Bangkok (open since April 2025), the rebuilt Dusit Thani Bangkok (reopened September 2024) and The Langham, Custom House on the river (expected 20 December 2026). Centara Reserve Krabi is expected in December 2026, and Six Senses Bangkok not until 2028. For slow travel, the Loy Pela rice-barge cruises to Ayutthaya and InterContinental Khao Yai, with suites in restored train carriages, stand out. In our own tours we use Pimalai Resort & Spa on Koh Lanta and Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort in Chiang Mai. Below: status, sources and how each fits a private, unhurried trip.

Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort, Chiang Mai

Thailand is easy to love and easy to get wrong. The famous places are busy, and a luxury trip can quickly turn into a string of transfers between big resorts. The best trips we plan for couples and families do the opposite: fewer bases, longer stays, a river journey instead of a traffic jam, and hotels with a sense of place.

This guide covers new and coming Bangkok hotels, two unusual ways to travel slowly, the established hotels we still recommend, and the resorts we already use in Metta Voyage itineraries. Each has its status as of October 2026 and a link to the official page or announcement. We have not included openings we could not confirm.

The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok Bangkok, Bang Rak, on the Chao Phraya Expected 20 December 2026; taking reservations History on the river
Six Senses Bangkok Bangkok, Silom Expected 2028 Future trips
Centara Reserve Krabi Krabi Expected December 2026 A beach stay in the south
Loy Pela Voyages Chao Phraya, Bangkok–Ayutthaya Operating A private river journey
InterContinental Khao Yai Resort Khao Yai Open since 2022 Families with teenagers
Pimalai Resort & Spa Koh Lanta, Krabi Open Beach time with space
Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort Chiang Mai, on the Ping River Open Couples in the north

New in Bangkok

Bangkok is usually the first or last stop of a Thailand trip, and the right hotel makes a big difference after a long flight. Three recent or coming openings change the options.

Aman Nai Lert Bangkok – open since April 2025

Aman Nai Lert opened on 2 April 2025 with 52 suites in Nai Lert Park, a historic private park in the city centre. It is Aman’s third urban hotel, after Tokyo and New York (official site; The Points Guy). For travellers who find Bangkok overwhelming, a hotel set in a garden is the gentlest possible introduction.

Dusit Thani Bangkok – reopened September 2024

The Dusit Thani, a Bangkok landmark facing Lumpini Park, reopened on 27 September 2024 after being rebuilt, with 257 rooms instead of the old 517. The rest of the Dusit Central Park complex, including an 11,200 m² roof park, opened during 2025 (Dusit announcement). Being opposite the city’s main park means early-morning walks before the heat, which older travellers in particular appreciate.

The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok – expected 20 December 2026

The Langham is restoring Bangkok’s 1888 Customs House on the Chao Phraya River in Bang Rak as a hotel of about 75 keys (60 rooms and 15 suites), with a T’ang Court restaurant and a Chuan Spa planned. It is expected to open on 20 December 2026 and is already taking reservations (official site; Afar). For a 2027 trip, it is the riverside heritage hotel to watch. As with every new opening, we would only confirm rooms once it is welcoming guests.

Six Senses Bangkok – expected 2028

Six Senses has signed a hotel on the former Narai Hotel site in Silom, in a Heatherwick-designed “lantern” tower; the hotel is expected in 2028, with Heatherwick’s wider Hatai project due in late 2027 (IHG announcement, 1 July 2025). It is not an option for 2027, but worth knowing if you are planning further ahead.

Established Bangkok hotels we still recommend

New is not always better. These hotels are not recent openings, but they remain excellent choices:

  • Waldorf Astoria Bangkok, Ratchaprasong: 171 rooms and suites in the shopping district (Forbes Travel Guide).
  • Rosewood Bangkok, Capella Bangkok and Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River: all operating since 2019–2020.

Two slow ways to see central Thailand

Loy Pela rice-barge cruises – operating

Loy Pela Voyages, listed by Minor Hotels, sails restored teak rice barges on the Chao Phraya between Bangkok and the old capital, Ayutthaya. Loy Dream has 2 cabins and Loy River Song has 4; trips are private charters for up to 8 adults, from 2 days/1 night to 4 days/3 nights, with a butler and private chef, starting at Anantara Riverside (Minor Hotels; TTG Asia). For a couple, or two couples travelling together, it is a lovely way to reach Ayutthaya without a single minute on the motorway.

InterContinental Khao Yai Resort – open since 2022

In the Khao Yai area, InterContinental Khao Yai Resort has 64 rooms and suites, 19 of them in restored train carriages, designed by Bill Bensley (official site; TTR Weekly). A night in a train carriage is a memorable treat for teenagers, and Khao Yai gives families a countryside break from Bangkok.

The south: Krabi and Koh Lanta

Centara Reserve Krabi – expected December 2026

The former Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi is being relaunched as Centara Reserve Krabi, the brand’s second Centara Reserve, expected in December 2026 (Hospitality Net). It is positioned as an upper-upscale to luxury beach resort; we will judge it once it has reopened.

Pimalai Resort & Spa, Koh Lanta – a resort we use

Pimalai has 900 metres of beachfront on 100 acres of forest on Koh Lanta, with rooms, suites, and beach and hillside pool villas, plus PADI diving (official site). It is our choice for a quiet beach finish: big enough for privacy, small enough to feel personal. Our Secret Sanctuary package on Koh Lanta, 6 days/5 nights (from US$2,519 per person) stays in a Hillside Ocean View Private Pool Villa and includes a half-day Koh Haa snorkelling and sunset cruise, a Thai massage and a Thai dinner at the resort.

The north: Na Nirand, Chiang Mai – a resort we use

Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort stands on Charoen Prathet Road by the Ping River, with Lanna-colonial residences, the riverfront TIME restaurant and a Glasshouse rooftop (official site). It is a calm, romantic riverside base for exploring Chiang Mai. For more choices in the north, see our guide to Chiang Mai’s best 5-star hotels.

How to plan a slow Thailand trip in 2027

For a 12- to 16-day trip, three bases are plenty: Bangkok (three nights, perhaps with a Loy Pela night to Ayutthaya), the north (three or four nights in Chiang Mai) and a beach (four or five nights on Koh Lanta, Krabi or Samui). Families might swap a night in Bangkok for Khao Yai. Thailand also combines well with Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam if you have three weeks.

Prices quoted above are the “from” prices as listed on each tour page, based on 2 travellers sharing; your final price is confirmed for your dates. Every Metta Voyage trip is private and tailor-made, and we can build any of the hotels above into your itinerary, subject to availability.
