Laos rewards travellers who are happy to slow down. There are few big resorts and no rush: the pleasure is in early-morning alms giving in Luang Prabang, long lunches above the Mekong, two days on a teak riverboat, and a quiet island in the far south. For couples and families with teenagers on a longer Indochina trip, a week in Laos is often the part they remember most.
This guide lists the luxury hotels, river cruises and lodges we would recommend for 2027, with their status as of October 2026 and a link to the official page or announcement. We have left out properties we could not confirm as open, including some that older guidebooks still list.

Luang Prabang: where to stay
Luang Prabang is the heart of most luxury trips to Laos. We suggest three or four nights: enough for the temples and the night market, a boat trip to the Pak Ou caves, a waterfall afternoon and at least one morning with nothing planned. Your choice of hotel decides whether you are in the old town, steps from the monasteries, or in the hills, with more space and silence.
Rosewood Luang Prabang – open

Designed by Bill Bensley, Rosewood Luang Prabang sits in a valley outside town, with a natural waterfall running through the site. Guests choose between riverside rooms and suites, Waterfall Pool Villas and Hilltop Tents (official site). It suits couples who want nature and privacy, with town a short drive away; the Hilltop Tents are a fun choice for families with teenagers.
Amantaka – open
Amantaka is set in colonial-era heritage buildings in Luang Prabang’s old town (official site). Its location is its great strength: you can walk to the temples before breakfast and be back by the pool when the day warms up.
Sofitel Luang Prabang – open
The Sofitel occupies a former colonial governor’s residence (official site). It is a good base for travellers who enjoy history and want an international brand’s service standards.

Satri House – open
Satri House describes itself as a luxury heritage hotel, and its booking site is live (official site). It is a good choice for couples who prefer a boutique house with character to a larger resort.
La Résidence Phou Vao – Luxury Collection conversion announced
La Résidence Phou Vao is a hilltop former royal guesthouse with 41 rooms and suites, a pool and a spa. Marriott announced in March 2026 that it would join The Luxury Collection in October 2026, becoming the brand’s first hotel in Laos (TTG Asia, 17 March 2026; Destination Asia). When we checked on 25 October 2026, the conversion had not yet been confirmed, so we will confirm the name and any changes when you book. Either way, the views over town at sunset are reason enough to stay.
Vientiane: Avani+ Lanexang
Avani+ Lanexang Vientiane opened on 15 July 2026 on Fa Ngum Road by the riverside, with 197 rooms. It is opening in phases: the Sabaidee Social venue from the third quarter of 2026, the Salongxay venue in the fourth quarter, and the AvaniSpa later (Hospitality Net). It is an upscale hotel rather than five-star luxury, which suits Vientiane: most travellers spend one or two nights here on the way to or from Luang Prabang. For more options, see our guide to Vientiane’s best luxury hotels.
Between the two: the Vientiane–Luang Prabang railway
The Laos–China Railway has changed how travellers move between the capital and Luang Prabang. The fast EMU trains take roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes; slower ordinary trains can take up to about 4 hours 20 minutes (overview). There is no English booking site, and timetables change by season, so we check the schedule and buy the tickets for you. For many guests, the train replaces either a domestic flight or a very long mountain drive.
On the Mekong: cruises and a riverside lodge
A slow boat on the Mekong is one of the great journeys of Southeast Asia: limestone cliffs, sandbanks, children waving from riverside villages, and long, unhurried hours on deck. There are two ways to do it in comfort.
Heritage Line Anouvong – back since 31 July 2026
Heritage Line’s Anouvong returned to service on 31 July 2026 after a redesign. It sails between Luang Prabang and Huay Xai in 3 days, and offers 7- or 9-day voyages to Vientiane, with new stops at Pak Sith and Ban Baw (Travel Weekly, 30 July 2026; official site). The longer voyages suit travellers who want the river to be the centrepiece of the trip.
Luang Say Cruise and Luang Say Lodge – operating

The Luang Say runs 2-day, 1-night journeys on teak boats between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang, in either direction, with an overnight at Luang Say Lodge in Pakbeng: 20 teak and rosewood bungalows built in 1998 (official site). It is the classic way to arrive in Luang Prabang from northern Thailand, and the same company owns Maison Dalabua in Luang Prabang.
Southern Laos: La Folie Lodge, Don Daeng

La Folie Lodge sits on Don Daeng island in the Mekong, opposite Champasak. It has wooden riverside bungalows, suites and a two-bedroom Residence, with a pool, spa and yoga; boat transfers are included, and it received an ASEAN Green Award in 2023 (official site). From here you can visit the temple complex of Wat Phou and continue south by road and longtail boat towards the Si Phan Don (“4,000 islands”). It is our favourite base in the south for couples, and roomy enough for families in the Residence.
How to build Laos into a 2027 trip
Laos combines naturally with Vietnam, Cambodia or northern Thailand. A comfortable pace is three or four nights in Luang Prabang, one or two in Vientiane, and three or four in the south, with the railway or a short flight in between. These Metta Voyage itineraries are a good starting point:
- Laos Retreat, 11 days, from US$2,614 per person: Luang Prabang, a boat trip to Pak Ou, and stays at Hillside Nature Lifestyle Resort, Sinouk Coffee Resort and La Folie Lodge.
- Southern Laos Secret, 9 days, from US$1,382 per person: Fandee Island, Sinouk Coffee Resort and La Folie Lodge, with a sunset cruise on the Mekong.
- Indochina Revealed, 20 days, from US$3,400 per person: Vietnam from north to south, then Vientiane and Luang Prabang, and on to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh in Cambodia.
Prices are the “from” prices as listed on each tour page, based on 2 travellers sharing; your final price is confirmed for your dates. We can swap in any of the hotels and cruises above. If your trip includes Vietnam, see our Vietnam e-visa guide and our favourite Vietnam luxury holidays.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best luxury hotel in Luang Prabang?
It depends on what you want. Amantaka and Satri House put you close to the old town; Rosewood Luang Prabang offers nature and space outside town; La Résidence Phou Vao has the hilltop views. We match the hotel to your pace and interests.
Has La Résidence Phou Vao become a Luxury Collection hotel?
Marriott announced the conversion for October 2026, but it had not been confirmed when we checked on 25 October 2026. We will confirm the current name and status when you book.
How long is the train from Vientiane to Luang Prabang?
About 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes on the fast EMU trains, longer on ordinary trains. Timetables change by season, so we check them for your dates.
Which Mekong cruise in Laos should I choose?
For a classic two-day journey between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang, the Luang Say Cruise with its Pakbeng lodge. For a longer voyage, including to Vientiane, Heritage Line’s redesigned Anouvong.
Is Laos suitable for families with teenagers?
Yes, at a gentle pace. Waterfalls, the Pak Ou caves, a night on the river and island cycling in the south usually go down well. We choose hotels with family rooms or connecting options.
