How to split three weeks between Vietnam and Cambodia
Most of our guests who have three weeks give Vietnam two thirds of the time and Cambodia one third. Vietnam is long and thin, stretching about 1,650 km from north to south, so each region needs its own base, and the internal flights between Hanoi, Hue or Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City take about an hour each. Cambodia is compact: Angkor needs three nights in Siem Reap, and Phnom Penh needs two.
Region
Nights
Why this many
Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Lan Ha or Ha Long Bay
5
Two nights in Hanoi, one in Ninh Binh and one on board give you the north without early starts every day
Hue and Hoi An
6
Hue’s monuments are spread out; Hoi An is the place most guests wish they had stayed longer, so we add a free day
Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta
4
One night in the delta lets you see the floating market at its busiest, early in the morning
Siem Reap (Angkor)
3
Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm and Banteay Srei at a comfortable pace, avoiding the midday heat
Phnom Penh
2
The Royal Palace, the National Museum and the history of the 1970s
If you prefer fewer hotel changes, drop Ninh Binh as an overnight and visit it as a day trip from Hanoi, or skip Phnom Penh and add a beach stay in Vietnam at the end. Travellers who have been to Vietnam before often do the opposite: a week in Cambodia, including Battambang or the south coast, and two weeks in central and southern Vietnam.
Should Cambodia come first or last?
Either works, and the choice usually depends on your flights. Ho Chi Minh City has direct flights to Siem Reap–Angkor of a little over an hour, so the route above flows naturally from north to south and ends in Cambodia. If you fly in via Bangkok or Singapore, it can be easier to start in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh and finish in Hanoi.
There is also a slower, more scenic option between the two countries: the Mekong boat between Chau Doc in Vietnam and Phnom Penh. It takes most of a day and suits travellers who enjoy river life more than speed. We include it only when the season and water levels make the trip comfortable, and we tell you in your quote if a flight is the better choice for your dates.
Two full days cover the essentials: Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom with the faces of the Bayon, and Ta Prohm with its trees growing through the stones. Three days, as in our itinerary, let you add Banteay Srei, the finest carvings in Cambodia, and an afternoon on the Tonle Sap lake. Your guide plans the order around the crowds and the light, and we keep the middle of the day free for lunch and a rest, which matters between March and May when temperatures often pass 35 °C.
The Angkor Pass is sold by Angkor Enterprise and is personal, with a photo. The official prices at the time of writing are US$37 for one day, US$62 for three days and US$72 for seven days; it is not included in our tour prices. Dress code for the upper levels of Angkor Wat: shoulders and knees covered.
Best time for a three-week trip
November to April is the most comfortable time to combine the two countries: Cambodia and southern Vietnam are dry, and the north is cool and mostly clear. The exception is central Vietnam, where Hue and Hoi An can be wet from October to early December; in those months we keep a flexible day in Hoi An and plan indoor visits as a back-up. From May to September it is hot everywhere and Cambodia has short tropical showers, but Angkor is greener and quieter. Our month-by-month guide to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos shows the weather by region.
What three weeks cost, and what is included
Our listed 14-day Vietnam and Cambodia tours start from US$1,960 per person, and the 21-day Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand journey from US$2,940, both for two travellers sharing a room in 4★ hotels. The 21-day route on this page is priced at the same daily rate, so it starts from US$2,940 per person. Travelling in 5★ hotels, adding a luxury cruise or travelling in the peak weeks around Christmas and Tet raises the price; travelling as a family of four or more usually lowers it per person. You receive one price for the whole trip, with every hotel named, before you pay anything.
To confirm, we ask for a 30% deposit; the balance is due 45 days before arrival. You can pay by bank transfer in your own currency or by card (card payments carry a 3.5% fee). Our how to pay page explains each option.
Visas for Vietnam and Cambodia
You need entry permission for both countries. Most travellers use Vietnam’s e-visa, valid for up to 90 days and applied for on the official portal; some nationalities, including British citizens, can enter visa-free for a limited stay. Cambodia issues an e-visa online at evisa.gov.kh (the official fee at the time of writing is US$30). Check the rules for your passport before you book flights; our Vietnam e-visa service can file and track the application for you, and our Cambodia visa guide explains the options.
Who this itinerary suits
The route is built for travellers who want to see the highlights properly rather than tick off places: couples, friends travelling together and families with children over ten. There are no long treks, every transfer is in a private air-conditioned car, and each day has time to rest. Your private guide speaks your language in Vietnam (on request) and, subject to availability, in Cambodia; we confirm it in writing before you book. Metta Voyage is an Asia DMC headquartered in Hanoi, licensed as an international tour operator (licence 01-1167/2023/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT), with more than 2,000 bookings and 10,100 guests, and rated 4.9 on Tripadvisor.

Frequently asked questions
Is 3 weeks enough for Vietnam and Cambodia?
Yes. Three weeks lets you travel Vietnam from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta in about 15 days and spend 6 days in Cambodia, with three nights in Siem Reap for Angkor Wat and two in Phnom Penh, without rushing.
How much does a 3-week Vietnam and Cambodia tour cost per person?
Our private 21-day route starts from US$2,940 per person for two travellers sharing a room in 4★ hotels, including guide, driver, domestic flights and entrance fees, but not international flights or visas. The final price is confirmed in your tailor-made quote.
Should I visit Cambodia at the start or the end of the trip?
It depends on your flights. Ending in Cambodia is easiest when you travel north to south, because Ho Chi Minh City has direct flights to Siem Reap. If you arrive via Bangkok or Singapore, starting in Cambodia can save time.
How many days do I need at Angkor Wat?
Two full days for the main temples; three days if you also want Banteay Srei and the Tonle Sap lake. A three-day Angkor Pass costs US$62 at the official price.
Do I need two visas for Vietnam and Cambodia?
Usually yes: Vietnam’s e-visa (or visa-free entry for some nationalities) and Cambodia’s e-visa, which costs US$30 at the official price. Check the rules for your passport before booking flights.
