What a two-week private trip to Vietnam costs

Our from-prices are built on one basis so you can compare them fairly: two travellers sharing a double or twin room in 4★ hotels, a private air-conditioned car with driver in each region, a private English-speaking guide, breakfast every day, entrance fees, the domestic flights written into the programme and an overnight cruise cabin on Lan Ha Bay. International flights are never included. Where a published tour matches the itinerary, as both routes above do, we quote its real price; for a route with no published tour we use an indicative 4★ rate of US$140 per person per day.

What moves the figure most is hotel level: 5★ properties and boutique resorts are available in every stop, and the two-night cruise upgrade on the bay is popular with couples; we show these as options in the quote, not in the from-price. Season matters too, with supplements around Christmas, New Year and the Tet lunar new year, and softer rates from May to September. Group size works in your favour: a family of four sharing one car and one guide pays noticeably less per person than a couple.

You pay nothing until you have approved the programme. A 30% deposit confirms the booking, the balance is due 45 days before arrival, and you can pay by bank transfer or by card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, AmEx or UnionPay via OnePay).

14 or 15 days: how to split your time between north, centre and south

Vietnam is 1,650 km long and its three regions have different climates and personalities, so two weeks is the point at which the country stops feeling rushed. Our rule of thumb for 14 days is five nights in the north (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, the bay), four or five in the centre (Hue and Hoi An) and four in the south (Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong). The 14-day itinerary follows exactly that rhythm and ends in Ho Chi Minh City, which has the widest choice of international flights.

The 15-day version trims a night in Hoi An and one in the south to make room for three nights on Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, where the white sand of Sao Beach and the calm west-coast sunsets round off the trip. It suits families with children over ten and couples who want the sightseeing to end with real rest. Either plan can be flipped to start in the south, which works well if your international flight lands in Ho Chi Minh City.

Getting around Vietnam: flights, trains and the road

Distances are long, so two domestic flights keep the itinerary comfortable: Hanoi to Hue after the bay, and Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City after Hoi An, with a third to Phu Quoc on the 15-day route. Between those flights you travel by private car with the same driver, which is how you reach Ninh Binh’s river landscapes and the Mekong’s small towns without changing vehicles or waiting for groups.

Two stretches are worth doing slowly. The drive from Hue to Hoi An over the Hai Van Pass, with stops at Lang Co lagoon and the Marble Mountains, is one of the most beautiful coastal roads in Asia; the Reunification Express train covers the same section along the cliffs if you prefer rails, and we can book it instead. On Lan Ha Bay, the quieter neighbour of Ha Long, an overnight cruise lets you see the karst islands at sunset and sunrise when the day boats have gone. See our guides to the Hue to Hoi An train and the best time to visit Ha Long Bay for details.

When to travel the north-to-south route

Because the regions differ, there is no single perfect month, but the shoulder periods line up well. October to April is dry and comfortable in the north, with Hanoi cool and sometimes grey from December to February; February to August is the dry season in Hue and Hoi An, which see their heaviest rain in October and November; and December to April is dry in the south and on Phu Quoc. For the whole route, late February to April and October to early December are the sweet spots. The summer months of June to August are hot and humid but bring green rice terraces in the north, calm seas in the centre and lower hotel rates.

Tet, the lunar new year, falls in late January or February. The streets fill with flowers and family celebrations, but many shops and some sites close for several days and domestic transport sells out, so we plan around it carefully if your dates coincide.

Visa: Vietnam's 90-day e-visa

Vietnam issues an electronic visa valid for up to 90 days, with single or multiple entry, through the official portal evisa.gov.vn. Apply at least a week before departure, carry a printed copy, and make sure your passport is valid for six months from your arrival date. Several nationalities, including most Western European passports, are exempt from a visa for short stays; we confirm the current rules for your passport when we prepare your quote. The visa fee is paid directly to the authorities and is not part of our price. Official travel information for the country is at vietnam.travel.

Who you travel with: an Asian DMC headquartered in Hanoi

Metta Voyage is an Asian DMC with its head office in Hanoi and a second office in Ho Chi Minh City, designing private and multi-country trips across Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Bali, China, Japan, Korea and Singapore; we hold Vietnamese international travel licence 01-1167/2023/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT and have been operating since late 2019. In Vietnam your trip is run directly by our own team: our guides, our partner drivers and 869 hotels, cruise operators and transport companies we work with across the country. You have one contact before and during the trip and 24/7 support on WhatsApp.

Every tour is 100% private: your own car and driver, your own guide in each region, and an itinerary that changes when you want it to. English-speaking guides are standard throughout Vietnam, and guides in other languages are available on request. Beyond Vietnam we operate through hand-picked local partner teams, with guides in your language subject to availability and one point of contact for all of Indochina. Our guests rate us 4.9/5 on Tripadvisor across 138 reviews, we hold Travellers’ Choice 2025, and we were named Sustainable Tour Company, South East Asia, at the World Luxury Travel Awards 2025.

Adding Cambodia or Laos to two weeks in Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City is an hour’s flight from Siem Reap, which is why many guests extend with Angkor. Our Treasure of Vietnam and Cambodia fits both countries into 14 days from US$1,960 per person by shortening the Vietnam legs, while the Like a Local in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos tour adds Luang Prabang as well. If Laos interests you on its own, see our Laos in 7 or 10 days: itinerary and price page; our Hanoi head office coordinates all of Indochina through hand-picked local partner teams, so you only ever deal with one quote and one contact.

Frequently asked questions

What does the two-week Vietnam from-price include?

The from-price covers 4★ hotels with breakfast for two travellers sharing, an overnight cruise cabin on Lan Ha Bay, a private car and driver, a private English-speaking guide in each region, entrance fees and the domestic flights in the programme. International flights, visa fees, most meals and insurance are not included. The final figure is confirmed in your tailor-made quote.

When is the best time for a north-to-south Vietnam trip?

Late February to April and October to early December suit the whole route best. The north is dry from October to April, the centre from February to August, and the south from December to April. Summer is hot and humid but green and quieter, with lower rates.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

Many visitors need the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days and applied for at evisa.gov.vn. Several nationalities are exempt for short stays. We confirm the rule for your passport when we prepare the quote; the fee is paid directly to the authorities.

Is 14 days too tiring for older travellers or children?

No, as long as the pace is set for you. The itinerary uses two domestic flights to avoid long drives, keeps most sightseeing in the cool mornings, and has free afternoons in Hoi An and on Phu Quoc. Because the trip is private, your guide adjusts each day to the group; we design many of these routes for grandparents travelling with grandchildren over ten.

How far in advance should I book?

Eight to twelve weeks is ideal for travel between October and April, when the better 4★ and 5★ hotels and the cruise cabins fill first; four to six weeks is usually enough for May to September. You pay nothing until you approve the programme, so starting early costs nothing.
