In short

Song Saa Private Island is a 24-villa resort on two islets, Koh Ouen and Koh Bong, in the Koh Rong Archipelago off Cambodia's south coast. It opened in 2013 after six years of conservation work and sits inside a protected marine reserve. Three or four nights at the end of an Angkor trip is the usual pattern, for couples first and for families with older children.

Why it is worth it

The two islets are joined by a footbridge over water clear enough to spot turtles. All 24 villas have infinity pools and open-air showers: jungle villas, ocean-view villas, overwater villas in one and two bedrooms, the Soluna Villa with its own treatment sala, and the two-bedroom Royal Villa. Vista, the restaurant and lounge, is an overwater thatched pavilion; Driftwood is the beach bar. The resort is independent and founder-led, and the Song Saa Foundation has worked in the archipelago since 2007, including the founding of Cambodia's first marine protected area; resident marine biologists restore coral on the house reef.

It is a place for doing little, well. Older couples take an overwater or ocean-view villa and the all-inclusive package so nothing needs deciding. Families with children over ten take a two-bedroom jungle or overwater villa and spend days snorkeling. The journey matters: car to the Sihanoukville port, then a boat of around 45 minutes, so allow a full travel day each way.

How we usually build the stay

Night 1Private car from Phnom Penh or the Sihanoukville airport to the port, speedboat of about 45 minutes, villa check-in, dinner at Vista.
Night 2Snorkel the house reef with the marine team, lunch at Driftwood, treatment in the Saraan sanctuary, sunset on the overwater deck.
Night 3Long-tail boat to Prek Svay village, afternoon in the pool, private dinner on the sand.
DepartureLate breakfast, boat and car back to the airport for the flight home or on to Phnom Penh.

How we fit it into your private trip

We place Song Saa as the last three or four nights of a private Cambodia trip, after Angkor and Phnom Penh. Our driver takes you from Phnom Penh to the Sihanoukville port, or we fly you to Sihanoukville and meet you there; the resort's shared speedboat does the crossing, and a private boat can be quoted. The all-inclusive package, villa category, and any diving are confirmed in your written quote.

Itineraries we often build around it:

Frequently asked questions

Is Song Saa suitable for travelers in their 70s?

Yes, if the journey is planned. The islands are small, paths are short, and villas have pools. The crossing is about 45 minutes by speedboat, which can be choppy in the rainy months, so we choose dates with care and can quote a private boat. Spa, dining, and snorkeling are all a few minutes' walk.

Can children come?

Families stay in the two-bedroom jungle or overwater villas and the Royal Villa. The reef, the marine biologists, and the village boat trip make it a good fit for children over ten who swim well. We confirm the resort's current policy for younger children and for overwater villas before quoting.

Is the all-inclusive package worth it?

For most couples, yes: it removes decisions and covers meals, house drinks, the minibar, a treatment each, snorkeling, and the shared transfers. If you plan to dive or go off-island a lot, those stay extra on any plan. We compare both options for your dates in your written quote.

How do we get there from Siem Reap?

Usually a short flight to Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville, then our private car to the Sihanoukville port and the resort speedboat. From Phnom Penh by road it is a long day, so we add a night in Kampot or Kep when time allows. Transfer timings are matched to the boat schedule.
