What a private Thailand tour costs per day

Thailand is the most affordable of the countries we cover in Asia, and the one where private travel gives the most for the money. Across our published programmes at 4★ level, the price works out at roughly US$100 to US$180 per person per day, based on 2 travellers sharing. That includes hotels with breakfast, the private guide and air-conditioned vehicle with driver, domestic flights or trains between regions, the entrance fees and boat trips named in the itinerary, and the meals stated in the programme.

Where your trip sits in that range depends on a few choices:

  • The north versus the islands. Touring days in Bangkok and the north, with guide and vehicle, cost more per day than free beach days in Phuket or on Koh Phi Phi.
  • Hotel level. 5★ upgrades are available in most places; specialist spa programmes such as Luxury Spas of Thailand: Bangkok, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai in 11 Days are priced much higher.
  • Season. Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year are the most expensive weeks on the islands.
  • Number of travellers. A family of four sharing a vehicle and guide pays less per person.

The exact figure for your dates is always confirmed in writing before you pay.

Sample itinerary: Thailand in 10 days, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket

Thailand Discovery: Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket in 10 Days, from US$1,570 for 10 days, is the route most first-time visitors ask for. Three nights in Bangkok cover Wat Pho, the Grand Palace and the Thonburi canals by long-tail boat, then the Maeklong railway market and the floating market at Damnoen Saduak. A short flight takes you to Chiang Mai for a cooking class on an organic farm, the dawn alms round, Doi Suthep and Wat Umong. You finish with three nights on Kata Beach in Phuket, including a day in Phang Nga Bay by cruise boat and canoe, and a free day by the sea.

Other 10-day options:

Sample itineraries: Thailand in 14 days and 21 days

With two weeks you can see Thailand’s three faces without rushing. Thailand Passion: Bangkok, the Golden Triangle and Koh Chang Island in 14 Days, from US$1,890 for 14 days, goes from Bangkok and the floating markets to Kanchanaburi and Erawan, Ayutthaya, then the tea hills of Mae Salong, Chiang Saen on the Mekong, Chiang Dao and Chiang Mai, before a few days on the quieter island of Koh Chang. Beauty of Thailand: Culture, the North and Three Beaches in 15 Days, from US$1,840 for 15 days, finishes with Koh Samui, Khao Sok and Phuket instead.

Three weeks is the length many of our retired guests choose, because it allows proper rest. Thailand Panorama: From Bangkok to the Golden Triangle and Phi Phi in 21 Days, from US$2,930 for 21 days, follows the old capitals from Ayutthaya to Kamphaeng Phet and Sukhothai, crosses the north to Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai with a guide for the first two weeks, then gives you a full week on the beach in Phuket and Koh Phi Phi. Grand Thailand: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Krabi, Kanchanaburi and Bangkok in 22 Days, from US$3,580 for 22 days, adds Krabi and finishes in Bangkok.

Any of these can be shortened, lengthened or reordered; the published programmes are a starting point for your own version.

Thailand and Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia in one trip, with one company

Thailand borders Laos and Cambodia, and Vietnam is a short flight away, so many of our guests combine two or three countries. Because our office is in Hanoi and Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are part of our everyday work, you deal with one company, one contract, one quote and one consultant for the whole route.

For Thailand and Vietnam alone, we usually suggest a week in northern Vietnam and Hoi An followed by Bangkok, Chiang Mai and a beach in the south, around 15 to 18 days. We quote it for your dates rather than from a fixed programme.

When to visit Thailand, and entry formalities

November to February is the most comfortable period for a touring trip: dry in Bangkok, cool mornings in Chiang Mai and calm seas on the Andaman coast. March to May is hot everywhere, and the northern hills can be hazy from late March. From May to October the west coast around Phuket and Krabi gets the southwest monsoon; for those months we often suggest the Gulf islands such as Koh Samui instead.

Entry rules depend on your nationality. Thailand asks foreign visitors to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online before arrival, and visa information is on the official Thai e-Visa site. UK travellers can read the UK government’s travel advice, and US citizens the US Department of State. Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam each have their own rules; we include a checklist with your quote.

Included

  • 4★ hotels with daily breakfast, twin or double room
  • Private English-speaking guide on sightseeing days
  • Private air-conditioned vehicle with driver for all transfers and touring

  • Entrance fees, long-tail and paddle boat trips named in the itinerary
  • Meals as stated in the programme (B, L, D), drinks not included
  • 24/7 support from your consultant in Hanoi and the local partner team

Not included

  • International flights to and from Thailand
  • Visa or entry formalities, where required for your nationality
  • Travel insurance, required for all guests
  • Meals and drinks not stated in the programme
  • Personal expenses, massages and optional activities
  • Tips for guides and drivers, at your discretion
  • 5★ upgrades, single-room supplement and festive-season supplements

Thailand private tour: your questions

How much does a 10-day private tour of Thailand cost with Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket?
Thailand Discovery: Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket in 10 Days starts at US$1,570 per person for 10 days, based on 2 travellers sharing in 4★ hotels, with a private English-speaking guide on sightseeing days, a private vehicle, two domestic flights and a Phang Nga Bay excursion. International flights are extra.
How much does a private Thailand tour cost per day?

Across our programmes at 4★ level, roughly US$100 to US$180 per person per day, 2 travellers sharing. Days with a guide and vehicle in Bangkok and the north cost more than free days on the beach, so longer trips with island time often come out cheaper per day: Thailand Panorama: From Bangkok to the Golden Triangle and Phi Phi in 21 Days is US$2,930 for 21 days.

Is there one company that can organise Thailand and Vietnam in the same trip?

Yes. As an Asia DMC based in Hanoi, we organise Thailand with Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia or Bali under one contract, one quote and one consultant. Vietnam, Thailand and Bali in 15 Days: Halong Bay, Hoi An, Bangkok and Ubud covers Vietnam, Thailand and Bali in 15 days from US$2,700; a Thailand and Vietnam route of around two and a half weeks is quoted for your dates.

Can one tour operator handle Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam with a single point of contact?

Yes, this is exactly the kind of trip our Hanoi team is set up for. Thailand, Laos and Cambodia in 13 Days: Chiang Mai, Luang Prabang and Angkor links Chiang Mai, Luang Prabang and Angkor in 13 days from US$2,450, and we can add Vietnam before or after. You have one consultant from the first quote to your flight home, reachable 24/7.

Is a private guide worth it in Thailand?

For temples, markets and the north, yes: the guide explains what you see, handles tickets and boats, and adapts the day to your pace. On beach days we leave you free. Every programme includes a private English-speaking guide on sightseeing days, and English-speaking guides are readily available throughout Thailand.

When should we book, and how do we pay?

For November to February, and especially Christmas and New Year, 4 to 6 months ahead. Other months, 2 to 3 months is usually enough. You get a programme and quote within 24 hours, pay nothing until you approve it, then 30% on confirmation and the balance 45 days before departure.
